That's it. The ref has brought that drab half of football to an end. Well done to him.

  2. Postpublished at 45 mins

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

    Two minutes added time.

Cardiff's Joe Bennett has a shot from a way out. Too far out. Smothered by keeper Rob Elliot.

This match is petering out to half-time.

Jack Beecroft: As a Newcastle fan it's got to be a defender, maybe Ryan Shawcross might like to swap red and white for black and white.

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

    It's all Newcastle right now.

Ciaran Clark is the latest man to have a pop at goal, but heads over the bar.

Replays are also showing Newcastle could have had a penalty just before that when Greg Halford tugged on the shirt of Ayoze Perez. It may have been harsh, but it goes into the 'Seen Them Given' basket.

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Christian Atsu's delivery is much better this time from a corner, but Newcastle centre-back Chancel Mbemba is off balance when he tries to strike it and the ball bounces over the top of the bar.

Meanwhile, Jonjo Shelvey is warming up to a chorus of boos from Cardiff fans, fully aware of his Swansea past.

  6. Postpublished at 38 mins

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle win a free-kick on the left-hand side in a really dangerous position, which Christian Atsu stands over.

His out-swinger evades absolutely everybody. Poor.

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

As I say that, Newcastle full-back DeAndre Yedlin forces keeper Allan McGregor into a smart stop when he runs on to a chipped ball over the top.

McGregor gets back up to deal with the resulting corner.

On the balance of play, Cardiff manager Neil Warnock will most certainly be the happier manager, but his side have been unable to get danger man Kenneth Zohore, fresh from signing a new contract, into the match.

Seems like former Magpies defender and BBC Newcastle summariser John Anderson has the same thoughts as me about this game...

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Two Cardiff corners in a row and Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot deals with both well.

First, he punches a delivery away from the onrushing Sean Morrison, before managing to gather a back-post header from the second.

Remember, it's only Elliot's second appearance of the season.

Ben Rudling: There are a fair few Palace fans in East Sussex too - Newcastle win please!

If Cardiff win, Brighton will be champions - which won't please fans of Brighton's rivals, Crystal Palace. I'm quite looking forward to seeing that Palace-Brighton rivalry in the Premier League next season.

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Cardiff have the ball in the net once more through Junior Hoilett, but it was never going to be allowed.

The winger was miles offside when he turned home Peter Whittingham's sliced shot, after Aron Gunnarsson had attempted an overhead kick.

  13. Postpublished at 28 mins

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Neat work down Cardiff's left between DeAndre Yedlin and Ayoze Perez earns Newcastle a corner, which is played short to Isaac Hayden and his cross goes straight into the hands of keeper Allan McGregor.

I think that's the first save he's had to make, and it was accidental.

  14. Postpublished at 26 mins

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle win a free-kick in a dangerous position, but it's easily dealt with by Cardiff's defenders.

Neil Warnock's side have been more than equal to everything the Magpies have thrown at them so far.

Are the north east side already on the beach with some dry martinis?

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 24 mins

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

    Kadeem HarrisImage source, PA

After Cardiff defender Jazz Richards prevents Christian Atsu from getting a cross into the box in a dangerous area, Kadeem Harris comes off for Craig Noone.

Harris just hasn't moved right since that Ayoze Perez challenge.

Noone, meanwhile, is a former Brighton player. Can he do his old side some favours?

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

In my opinion nobody's long throw is better than former Stoke midfielder Rory Delap's.

Aron Gunnarsson, though, does come close to the long-throw legend - again forcing Rob Elliot to punch the ball away.

From a corner soon after Cardiff have the ball in the net through Sean Morrison, but the referee has already long blown for a foul by the Cardiff defender on Ciaran Clark.

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Isaac Hayden doesn't look in a good way as he clashes heads with Greg Halford challenging for Aron Gunnarsson's long throw into the box.

It's been a rather stop-start opening so far.

Meanwhile, Cardiff's Kadeem Harris is still hurting from that earlier Ayoze Perez tackle.

  18. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Ayoze Perez has just demonstrated the definitive "striker's challenge".

Kadeem Harris had sprayed the ball left, but Newcastle forward Perez steamed in late to take out Harris.

He's given a warning by the referee.

Isaac Hayden, wash your mouth out.

The Newcastle midfielder lets out a tirade of abuse towards himself as he fires high, wide and not so handsome, caught on camera of course.

  20. Postpublished at 9 mins

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

    Immovable object, meet unstoppable force.

Cardiff's Greg Halford and Newcastle's Mohamed Diame go up to challenge a high ball together, leaving Halford slightly worse for wear.
