Summary

  • Atsu and Hayden with second-half goals for Newcastle

  • Magpies now one behind leaders Brighton

  • Newcastle were promoted to Premier League on Monday

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark is not a man you usually find striding forward and putting a cross into the box, but he does so here.

He cannot find fellow Republic of Ireland international Daryl Murphy in the middle, however.

Still managed to get a lot of whip on that cross, like an ice cream.

The atmosphere at the Cardiff City Stadium has been a little sleepy in recent months, given the fact the home side have had little to play for in mid-table.

You can't say that tonight, though - and that's mainly because of the great noise the 4,000 travelling Newcastle fans are making.

With promotion already secured, the Toon Army are bouncing in their corner of the ground. Win tonight and they might even have a title to toast as well.

Tom Quante: Everyone in East Sussex tonight wishes Cardiff City the best against Newcastle... channelling my inner dragon.

A reminder that a Cardiff win would make Brighton champions. Whatever the result, the Seagulls will clinch the title if they beat Bristol City tomorrow.

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Cardiff's Aron Gunnarsson is always a danger with a long throw, but this time he's a danger with his feet.

The Icelander strikes low from outside the area, but despite a lot of power behind the strike, Rob Elliot is equal to it.

Another move down the left-hand side as the ball is chipped through to Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback, but his cross into the middle is to nobody.

  6. Postpublished at 1 min

    Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle

Early warning signs for Cardiff, and my word didn't they make it easy for Christian Atsu.

The Newcastle winger cut in from the left past two defenders like they weren't even there and got off a shot, which was blocked by a stretching defender.

Newcastle and Cardiff fans - you both know where you'll be next season.

Therefore, I'm asking the question  'If you could have one, realistic, signing this summer, who would they be?'

That means Paul Pogba, Paulo Dybala and Paul Konchesky are off the cards... Sorry to all of you Konchesky fans out there.

You may be asking yourself why popular comedian Rhod Gilbert has popped up in our coverage.

    Good question.

Well, BBC Radio Wales has live commentary of tonight's game, with build-up having started straight after Rhod's show on the station.

For Anglo-Welsh balance, BBC Newcastle will also be covering every kick, cough and spit for you.

Unfortunately, we are unable to bring you any BBC local radio commentaries of EFL games online because of rights restrictions.

The build up to this match has been slightly overshadowed by events on Wednesday, when the grounds of Newcastle and West Ham were raided by HM Revenue & Customs in a fraud investigation.

Newcastle's managing director Lee Charnley was among "several men within professional football" who were arrested but he was released without charge.

The Magpies will want to put off-field events to one side tonight.

The last time these pair met in Wales in October 2013, both were Premier League sides in the early mid-table shake-up.

Loic Remy scored twice in a 2-1 win for visitors Newcastle, managed by Alan Pardew, while Malky Mackay's side's reply came from the boot of Peter Odemwingie - his only league goal for the Bluebirds (playing in red, as they were then).

These guys will be looking on with interest tonight.

If Newcastle lose tonight, Brighton will be crowned Championship champions.

If the Magpies are held to a draw, their bird-like counterparts, the Seagulls, just need a draw for the title to wing its way to the south coast.

Cardiff drew 0-0 at Wigan in their previous outing and manager Neil Warnock makes six changes from that match.

Goalkeeper Allan McGregor, midfielder Peter Whittingham and striker Kenneth Zohore are all restored to the starting line-up.

When Neil Warnock took charge of Cardiff in October, the Welsh side were in the relegation zone after just two wins from their first 11 matches.

Since Warnock came in, Cardiff have never looked in danger of going down, winning 14 of their 34 matches with the 68-year-old in charge.

They go into tonight's match in the safe, warm, welcoming mid-table position of 13th in the Championship table.

Monday's 4-1 win over Preston secured an immediate return to the top flight for Rafael Benitez's side, who will be joined in England's top tier by Brighton next term.

    "After the Lord Mayor's show."

A famous idiom derived from the team that used to clean up horse manure after the Mayor's spectacle.

Hopefully tonight our game won't resemble anything like that, but with Newcastle already assured of promotion and Cardiff bang in mid-table, this has all the makings of a dung game... I mean dud.

But anything can happen and the title is still at stake, so stay with us for live text coverage of Cardiff v Newcastle.
