An interesting fight in the first of the Championship play-off semi-finals, but no knockout blows landed.

It's a short turnaround for the two teams, with the second leg at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday at 19:45.

Reading will be without captain Paul McShane following his sending off for an awful challenge on Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald, but the Royals looked solid when Tiago Ilori came into defence as his replacement.

Fulham will simply hope to repeat their performance from today, as they looked much the stronger of the sides for most of the 90 minutes.

On balance of play I think Reading for their spirit and resolve this season perhaps deserve to take the contest into the second leg. Fulham showed their quality in glimpses, but only at times. 

The second leg now promises to be a monumental match.

Reading will be the happier of the two sides as the full-time whistle blows, as they will host Fulham in the second leg with the scores tied at 1-1.

Jordan Obita put the Royals ahead against the run of play, before Tom Cairney headed the Cottagers deservedly level.

Paul McShane's sending off gave Fulham hope of stealing a late winner, but they could not find a way past a resilient Reading defence.

Ryan Fredericks beats Jordan Obita down the right-hand side and fizzes a cross over the six-yard box, but he can't find a team mate.

Into the final minute, will we see a late twist?

An opening for Fulham full-back Scott Malone, but Liam Moore gets out to make a brave block.

Malone is almost in again as he challenges for a cross at the back post, but it's headed behind by Reading defender Chris Gunter.

There will be five added minutes at the end of the second half.

Neither team has looked like scoring a second goal, but there's still enough time for that to change.

Reading win a corner - a chance to grab a late winner against the odds?

No such luck as Fulham clear their lines, but the hosts can't launch a counter attack.

They're into the final minute of regular time at Craven Cottage.

It is a poor challenge. He's at full stretch with the right foot. There can't be any complaints from McShane. 

I was going to give him the benefit of the doubt. But having seen the replay the referee has got no choice but to show him the red card.

It's a really poor challenge, and Reading's Paul McShane is shown the red card.

Referee Stuart Attwell is left with no choice, with McShane lunging into a high, reckless tackle on Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald.

Royals boss Japp Stam responds to McShane's dismissal by taking off forward Joseph Mendes - on as a substitute less than 10 minutes earlier - and bringing on Tiago Ilori in defence.

It must be said Tom Cairney got an impressive amount of air on his celebration after his equaliser.

I wonder if he ever considered a career as a basketball player?

The contrasts of styles could not be greater. Fulham have already taken off their only physical player in the form of Chris Martin, while Reading have plenty of players over six foot on the pitch. 

The difference in game-plans couldn't be clearer cut.

The pace has slowed a little, with Reading seemingly happy to allow Fulham to keep hold of the ball inside their own half. 

The Cottagers will be desperate for a goal to give them a lead heading into the second leg, as their opponents have a very impressive home record.

And now another change for Reading, with John Swift - booked for time wasting in the first half - taken off.

Joey Van den Berg comes on for the final 15 minutes plus whatever time is added on at the end of the half.

Tom Cairney goes down under a challenge from Danny Williams in the Reading box, but the only penalty appeals come from Fulham's fans.

The hosts are firmly on top of the game now.

Reading have brought Joseph Mendes on for Lewis Grabban.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic looked a frustrated figure before Tom Cairney's equaliser, but now his side are pushing for a winner.

You'd have to think Reading would be very happy to take a draw from here.

Scott Malone deserves an enormous amount of credit. He could have gone back to the goalkeeper, but instead he went forward and put a dangerous cross into the six-yard box. 

Tom Cairney has been quiet all afternoon but he was in the right place at the right time to head in. 

Adrenaline is coursing through the veins of the Fulham players. What an atmosphere we have now!
