Who will win the Championship play-offs?

Matt Price: Sheffield Wednesday or Fulham. Wednesday are out for vengeance after last year but Fulham's style of play would fit in in the Prem.

Kyle Utterson: I can see Fulham winning 3-1 tonight and going up too. They're a quality in-form side who are scoring goals for fun.

Sound the klaxon, today we have a first: goalline technology in a Championship play-off semi final.

That's right. The technology has been used in play-off finals, but never before at this stage. Next season it will be introduced across all Championship matches.

Will we see any usage today, I wonder?

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic's programme notes emphasise the importance of focus and concentration for his side.

Despite their 5-0 success against the Royals on this ground in December, Jokanovic stresses it "counts for nothing".

"Although, we can take some confidence knowing that we've been on an exceptional run of form and have a great momentum currently," he said.

"The most important thing in games like this, where so much is at stake, is we remain focused and concentrated."

"Extremely attacking and quite open at the back."

The words captain Tom Cairney rather sheepishly used when he was asked to describe Fulham in a short sentence.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side are joint top scorers in the Championship this season and have become known for what Cairney describes as an "un-Championship style".

"We're the highest scorers in the league but we have to bring men forward to score goals," he told Football Focus.

"So obviously at times we'll be a bit short at the back or one-on-one defending but the manager is happy with that. That's what's worked for us and I think works for our players."

Royals centre-back Liam Moore says the pundits and bookmakers are not always correct.

Defender Liam Moore has no problem with Reading being labelled underdogs as they bid to win promotion through the Championship play-offs.

Moore, 24, has played a key role in Jaap Stam's side in his first season since joining from Leicester City.

And he hopes to tap into some of the fairytale spirit which led Leicester to the Premier League title a year ago.

"I was around a 5,000-1 miracle last year, so I don't look too much into the odds," he told BBC Radio Berkshire.

"If people want to write us off without a ball being kicked, then that's fine. We'll continue to work hard and see where it takes us."

Fulham defender Scott Malone believes his side have momentum and are the Championship play-off favourites ahead of the meeting with Reading.

Fulham finished sixth, but lost just two of their final 17 league games.

"Being seventh up until two weeks ago has helped us. We needed to carry on winning games to get into the top six, whereas the other three teams already knew they were in," Malone said.

"The momentum is with us, we're playing really well and our form is good."

Five times Reading have previously competed in the end-of-season play-offs and five times Reading have failed to win promotion.

Could it be sixth time lucky?

They certainly finished the regular season in good form, winning seven of their last 10 games.

What is giving fans sleepless nights at the moment is the occasional away glitch, when they concede goals like they are going out of fashion.

For Reading, it's about staying in the tie on Saturday. Then on Tuesday, with Reading boasting the second-best home record and Fulham having the second-best away record in the Championship, it will be all about who can hold their nerve."

For months now, Fulham have looked like a team ready to tackle the play-offs. Now they need to deliver.

Their exciting, expansive style of play makes them stand out in the Championship. No-one plays football like Fulham in this league.

Their dismantling of Newcastle in front of a dumbfounded St James Park in March underlined their potential. However, their greatest asset is also their weakest link.

They only play one way and that can lead to problems. Results against Wolves and Derby showed they can be naive and unable to alter their approach.

Fulham's fate in these play-offs will be decided by Fulham alone. If they play to their potential, they'll get promoted.

Royals boss Jaap Stam wants to finish season with a flourish and make a good season great

Reading manager Jaap Stam is a cool customer.

He has basically used the football version of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" to describe how he will treat the play-offs.

"We're prepping in exactly the same way we have all season. There's no reason for us to do things differently in how we've been working throughout the season.

"These are games that really matter in terms of your nerves and everything that comes into the game, certain tactics maybe.

"It's about coolness of players, do they still have the same ability to deliver certain things under pressure?

"It's going to be interesting how this game's going to go for them and for us. We've got a mixture of young and experienced players, so it's going to be a great learning experience for everybody."

    Fulham v Reading (17:30 BST)

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic has history of promotion to the Premier League, but this will be his first ever play-off campaign in English football.

"I don't know what's better, playing the first leg at home or away," he said. "We know we're starting at home in this tie and we're happy and confident.

"That's the most important thing in this situation where we are now.

"We're not intimidated in this situation, we've prepared this week in the normal way and I don't need to revolutionise anything for this game.

"The players know what they need to do for this game. We must quietly concentrate on our normal practice before playing Reading."

"Reading are very ambitious like I am and want to get back to the Premier League." Jaap Stam, 14 June 2016.

Eyebrows were raised when Reading gave former Manchester United and Netherlands defender Jaap Stam his first job in management in the summer.

But those words, spoken when he was first appointed, were not empty. The man with a steely reputation built a side that finished third in the Championship.

People speak of Fulham's momentum going into the play-offs, but Stam's side go into them on a run of seven wins from from nine, which isn't too shabby itself...

  17. THE moment?published at 16:53 British Summer Time 13 May 2017

Was this the moment that turned Fulham's season from mediocre to memorable?

Trailing 1-0 in the 95th-minute at Craven Cottage against a Leeds side that were in fourth place, eight points above Fulham, Tom Cairney curled a beautiful strike past keeper Rob Green to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

Since that night on 7 March, the two sides' fortunes have totally flip-flopped. Fulham won seven of their final 10 matches, while Leeds only secured two more wins to slip out of the top-six and below Slavisa Jokanovic's side.

"I think we've been been brilliant since the New Year," Fulham captain Cairney told Football Focus.

"The equaliser against Leeds was a big turning point. I think if they'd have got three points that night we wouldn't have been able to catch them."

Reading got their revenge for the 5-0 reverse in December when they won their rearranged meeting at the Madejski Stadium in January.

Thick fog forced the originally scheduled fixture in December to be abandoned at half-time when the game was goalless.

Roy Beerens swept in the rebound from a John Swift saved penalty kick for the only goal of the game.

Fulham missed a golden chance to equalise when Chris Martin's 90th-minute penalty was seved by Ali Al Habsi.

Their last visit back in December ended in a 5-0 defeat and an afternoon to forget.

Chris Martin netted twice, Chris Gunter headed into his own net and Danny Williams got his marching orders early in the second half.

    Doesn't time just fly by?

The bulk of the Championship season is over, and now just four teams are left to battle it out for a place in the Premier League.

Last year, it was Hull's turn to celebrate as they beat Sheffield Wednesday in a hard-fought final at Wembley.

Today, sixth-placed Fulham play host to third-placed Reading, with both sides desperate to follow in the Tigers' footsteps.
