If Arsenal are serious about giving themselves Champions League football they are really going to have to step it up. They have been sloppy at best. 

It hasn't been a great game. 

Former Southampton manager Nigel Adkins is in the stands at St Mary's. It reminds me of my favourite ever quote from a football news conference. 

Adkins: "What's the biggest room in your house?"

Reporter: "The living room?"

Adkins: "No, the room for improvement."

A foul throw from no other than Alexis Sanchez. I've seen it all now...

Nice play from Arsenal. 

Hector Bellerin sweeps a cross to Aaron Ramsey, but he puts his first take wide and over. 

Nacho Monreal is down holding his face after clashing with James Ward-Prowse, who's already on a yellow.

It looks accidental but the Arsenal defender might have to blink a bit to sort his vision out. 

We're being told it's a hamstring injury for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Not idea for Arsenal's run-in. 

Hector Bellerin gifts the ball to Manolo Gabbiadini who supplies Steven Davis on the edge of the area.

But the Southampton captain makes a right hash of his first-time effort and it goes waaaaaay over the target and into the stands.

Let's all pray for goals, goals, goals please. Otherwise I'll be forced to reference more average pop stars.

Frustrating that the half-time whistle came for Arsenal because they felt like they were forcing the issue at the end of the half - a half in which Petr Cech made two decent saves from Gabbiadini and Redmond. A decent game.  

Well, that was...ok?

Alexis Sanchez does well to find Hector Bellerin on the right, and the Arsenal sub whips the ball to Danny Welbeck who's prowling in the box. 

Welbeck can't quite get on the end of it, though. 

James Ward-Prowse is booked for a tackle on Danny Welbeck and Arsenal have a free-kick from distance.

Mesut Ozil to takes it, it falls on to the head of Shkodran Mustafi but his aim is weak and Fraser Forster gathers safely. 

A great hit from Nathan Redmond! He drives the ball with force from just outside the area but Petr Cech gets his gloves to it and palms it out of play.

Gabbiadini takes the free-kick...it's bending....it's gone wide.

Nothing to see here. 

Ryan Bertrand sends a long, looping ball towards an on-rushing Manolo Gabbiadini, but Petr Cech gets his mitts on it. 

The Saints striker might have been just offside there.

Now Southampton earn a free-kick for Shkodran Mustafi's tackle on Dusan Tadic, about 30 yards out from goal. The Arsenal players - and manager - are not happy about it. They reckon he got the ball.
