Manchester United were the first team from England to win the European Cup in 1968, a year after Celtic, and have since added the trophy in 1999 and 2008.

They added the now defunct European Cup Winners' Cup in 1991 (above) but have never won the Europa League, or its predecessor the Uefa Cup.

Ajax are one of four clubs to have won all three European trophies - alongside Chelsea, Juventus and Bayern Munich - but last lifted continental silverware in 1995.

Matthijs de Ligt was born in August 1999, just a few weeks after Chelsea had signed Chris Sutton for £10m, the Millennium Stadium had just opened in Cardiff and a day after the total solar eclipse.

You must remember that?! We all watched that.

Ajax's on-loan Chelsea forward Bertrand Traore - who starts tonight - told BBC World Service: "I have big respect for Jose Mourinho, I think he'll be happy to see me and I'll be happy to see him too. He was the one who gave me an opportunity and I'm grateful for that.

"When I played in the Under-17 World Cup Manchester United had an interest but that was many years ago, it's always a dream to hear about big clubs being interested in you but I just kept doing my thing."

As a Dutchman, I've supported Ajax all my life, and have fond childhood memories of the 1995 CL final. However, I spent 4 years in Manchester and it remains a city close to my heart. The recent event were awful to see. In light of recent events, of course I want United to win it for the city, but then again, I want the Bosz babes to win it even more...!

Ajax's players have just arrived at the stadium and look incredibly relaxed as they make their way out on to the pitch for the their pre-match walkabout. Lots of smiles and laughter.

And they all look very young - possibly because lots of them are very young.

What a reception they have just received from the Ajax fans all around this impressive Friends Arena in Stockholm.

  14. 'Trophy parade would lift the whole city'published at 18:25 British Summer Time 24 May 2017

Ajax v Manchester United (19:45 BST)

    Phil Neville
Former Manchester United defender in Stockholm

After a horrendous 24-48 hours, the mood in Stockholm is slightly subdued, but hopefully we can enjoy 90 minutes of brilliant football and put a smile on people's faces.

In 1999 when we won the Champions League we paraded the trophy in the city centre, ending in the Arena and celebrated there. It was unbelievable.

After what happened on Monday, I think if they win, United should parade the trophy around Manchester, finish at the Arena.

I think it would be special.

You should fill the streets of Manchester - Deansgate, St Peter's Square, St Ann's Square - and get the trophy back.

Football can do brilliant things and if United win the trophy tonight, don't off on holiday, get back to Manchester, get the trophy out and share the success with the city.
