Summary

  • £30m keeper Pickford saves Wahlqvist penalty

  • First game of tournament, which is being held in Poland

  • Three groups of four teams; England in Group A

  1. GREAT SAVE!published at 71 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Good effort! He's a dead-ball specialist, and more importantly a man wearing all-black boots, James Ward-Prowse bends one over the wall and forces Anton Cajtoft into a very good save. That may have beaten Joe Hart...

Sweden counter and Mason Holgate commits to an all-or-nothing slide. And wins the ball.

  2. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 70 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Is this the change that England need? Jacob Murphy comes off, Demarai Gray is on.

  3. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 67 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Almost a freak opener for England! Alfie Mawson again wins a header from a long throw, it causes panic which is eventually half hacked out to Ben Chilwell. He drives a low shot in which takes a whacking great deflection off a Swedish heel and drifts over the keeper, but onto the crossbar...

  4. CLOSE!published at 66 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

There's the sub, pacey and in behind the England defence but Carlos Strandberg can only thrash a shot into the side-netting. Decent hit.

  5. Cibicki is the danger manpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Pawel Cibicki, who hit the crossbar, is dangerous. he twice drifted into space in the first half to create their two chances. He's constantly checking over both shoulders with his awareness. He drops off or moves along the line with his movement.

  6. CLOSE!published at 61 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

That's better from Ben Chilwell! A good cross for once, destined for the craned neck of Tammy Abraham but it is just about cut out.

From the corner, Lewis Baker fires over the top. The old Anderton-Sheringham corner routine.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 59 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Sweden make a change up front. On comes Carlos Strandberg in place of Gustav Engvall.

  8. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 57 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

This is going to end 0-0, unless someone scores a cracker! Of course.

What a great effort from Pawel Cibicki! The Malmo man picks the ball up on the left of the area and flashes a curler which beats Jordan Pickford but smashes against the crossbar.

    Fantastic strike. Deserved a goal.

  9. Postpublished at 54 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

This is going to end 0-0, unless someone makes a clanger of a mistake. Both teams are able to get the ball into promising areas but look unable to fin the important pass. England only really have one other striker to choose from, if they wanted to go two up top. Fulham man Cauley Woodrow is on the bench.

  10. 'England need to get Redmond involved'published at 18:10 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Neither side makes a change as the second half is under way.

England will hope to get Nathan Redmond involved more.

I thought he was England's best player two years ago but hasn't been afforded much space down the left.

  11. Postpublished at 50 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Early to draw conclusions but if you were going to, it's the other direction which looks like the issue. England again work the ball wide but a cross doesn't find a man.

They do look dangerous from set-pieces as Tammy Abraham heads wide - but only after a foul in the box.

Johnny Magrinho: Am I wrong to suggest that back 4 + Pickford looks pretty decent? Some big potential - hopefully we'll see it this tournament.

  13. KICK-OFFpublished at 45 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Not one shot on target in the first half. Borefest.

    We are back under way.

A reminder that hosts Poland and Slovakia are the other teams in Group A, and play later tonight.

  14. How important is a win?published at 17:58 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Uefa has crunched the numbers on this and it turns out, unsurprisingly, that it's very important.

    • Nearly 77% of first-game winners have made the knockout stages since 2000.
    • Draw on your final tournament debut, and your semi-final chances are slashed to 50/50.
    • Just 23% of teams who have lost their opening match have made the last four.

  17. 'No sustained pressure'published at 17:51 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

    Ian Dennis

Neither goalkeeper with a shot to save is a perfect illustration of a typically tight opener.

Jacob Murphy has been England's bright spark down the right but neither side enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure.

England made a promising start and had a chance at the end, Tammy Abraham with an acrobatic effort over the top from close range.

  20. CLOSE!published at 44 mins

    Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

That's a tough ask, and a good effort from Tammy Abraham. Alfie Mawson nudges on a long throw in the Swedish box, the men in yellow are far from convincing in their attempts to clear and Abraham acrobatically overhead kicks the ball over the top on the six-yard line.
