    Normal service resumed.

Real Madrid ended last season by winning a trophy and begin this one by winning another.

Cristiano Ronaldo was on the bench for 82 minutes of the game and they have not even signed Kylian Mbappe yet (if you believe everything you read in the papers).

    Scary stuff.

    EFL Cup first round results

Tuesday's EFL Cup first-round action concludes with a win for Scunthorpe, 6-5 on penalties against Notts County, after a 3-3 draw.

That shootout saw the competition's first trial of the 'ABBA' system and Matt Gilks' save from Matt Tootle stopped it going On And On And On.

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United Jose Mourinho: "The group is fantastic and Marouane Fellaini is an example of spirit we have. We fought until Cristiano Ronaldo got on to the pitch. I am happy because we lost a game, lost a cup, but not the season. We are better now than when we were when we won the Europa League.

On potential signing of Gareth Bale: "Clearly the club want him, the manager wants him and he wants the club. Clearly game over. I think everyone knows he is going to stay.

"We deserve rest on Wednesday and Thursday we start. I am so happy to be manager of these guys and told them I have never had a group I like as much as I like them. I am going to fight with them all the way."

  5. 'A fantastic team'published at 22:27 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Real Madrid 2-1 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to BT Sport: "I think we did well, I think we lost to one goal which shows the result was really short and one of their goals was an offside. With a good VAR system it would be 1-1 and extra-time.

"They could have scored more goals than they did, we could have scored more goals than we did. They had a period of dominance at middle of the first half and we had a period of dominance at middle of the second half."

"We were playing a team full of fantastic players, we discussed the result until almost the end.

"I say almost the end because with Cristiano Ronaldo coming on, because every time Ronaldo wanted a free-kick the game was stopped. We gave them a fight but have reasons to leave optimistic and proud. Let's go for Sunday."

    Real Madrid 2-1 Man Utd

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, speaking to BT Sport: "It is obviously great to keep adding to the trophy collection. It was a difficult game but I think we played well and controlled the game very well.

"It helped we have been training in 38C heat in Madrid! We controlled the game and deserved to win. We want to keep winning and every game we still have the hunger and desire."

On transfer speculation linking him to Manchester United: "I'm just concentrating on my football and I'm not listening to anything. I'm not reading anything, although people tell me bits and bobs. I'm enjoying my football and playing as much as a I can and winning trophies."

Have Madrid told him that he can move on? "Not that I know of. I haven't had any of those conversations. I am just concentrating on my football and trying to get fitness up after not playing regularly for eight or nine months."
