These two sides last met in a competitive game in March 2013, as Nani's controversial red card allowed Real Madrid to claim a 2-1 second leg victory in the Champions League and advance 3-2 on aggregate into the quarter-finals.

Of the starting elevens on that day, only David de Gea and Michael Carrick remain at Manchester United, with Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo surviving at Real Madrid.

Real Madrid v Man Utd (19:45 BST)

Manchester United have beefed up their squad with £146m of prime footballing talent this summer - and all three players who they have splashed the cash on start.

£75m striker Romelu Lukaku leads the line, with £31m defender Victor Lindelof and £40m midfielder Nemanja Matic also named in Jose Mourinho's starting XI.

That's means only six of the side which started May's Europa League final against Ajax play, with the likes of Anthony Martial, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford on the bench.

Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench?! It is not as surprising as it sounds seeing as the Madrid superstar only returned to training at the weekend. The Ballon d'Or winner was given an extended break after helping Portugal finish third at the Confederations Cup earlier this summer.

So that means it is not surprising either to see Gareth Bale start in his place. That's despite Jose Mourinho seemingly attempting to make a bit of mischief in his news conference yesterday.

Mourinho, remember, said he would "fight" to sign Bale if he was not in Madrid's plans, adding if the Welshman played tonight "it is the clearest signal that he is staying there."

Otherwise it is a familiar-looking Madrid XI, with the other 10 players all having started the Champions League final win against Juventus.

Gareth Bale's potential move to Manchester United is off then...?

Ahead of the match, United manager Jose Mourinho said he will "fight with other coaches" to sign Bale if Real Madrid are willing to sell the Wales forward.

Bale, 28, joined the Spanish giants for a world record fee of £85m from Premier League side Tottenham in 2013.

"If he plays, it is the clearest signal that he is staying there," said the former Real manager.

Basically, a European version of the Community Shield.

Real Madrid earned their place after winning last season's Champions League against Juventus, while Manchester United got their spot after triumphing over Ajax in the Europa League.

Zinedine Zidane's side are looking to defend the trophy after beating Sevilla in a thriller last time out, while Jose Mourinho's men last lifted this cup in 1991.

No English club has won the competition since Liverpool defeated CSKA Moscow in 2005.
