That type of skill is the reason why United paid such a huge sum for Anthony Martial, and also why he is so frustrating.

His time at Old Trafford is littered with moments like that. But along with them come days when the Frenchman is anonymous.

It has been suggested Martial might be used as a makeweight in the deal to get Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan.

United want to be certain they couldn't get more from Martial before they let him leave because if he can find consistency, he can be brilliant.

Jay: Bailly & Jones are playing brilliantly in defence. Lingard, Martial & Pereira are playing amazingly. Great to watch this match

GOAL - Real Madrid 0-1 Manchester Unitedpublished at 45 mins

    Jesse Lingard

That's what Anthony Martial can do! He has three defenders on him as he drives in from the left wing, some silky feet and a touch of luck sees him dance past them all in a second, and he then slides the ball across for Jesse Lingard to tap in.

Great skills from the former Monaco man.

Brilliant again from Luka Modric. A class act. First he plays a through-ball from the centre circle which Phil Jones does well to clear before popping up on the right wing and threading a cross into the middle, which Sergio Romero clears away smartly.

  13. CLOSE!published at 41 mins

    Real Madrid 0-0 Manchester United

A flurry of action as the half draws to a close, Jesse Lingard carries the ball at pace and shoots on the run, from 22 yards, it swerves away from Keylor Navas but just past the post as well. Good effort!

  14. Postpublished at 39 mins

    Real Madrid 0-0 Manchester United

Real have a three-on-three breakaway but Lucas Vazquez makes a mess of the final ball, as does Anthony Martial at the other end moments later.

Is this a big season for Anthony Martial? His Manchester United career is in danger of peaking on his debut at the moment.

It was interesting to note just then the Manchester United players were all given towels to put on the back of their necks to cool them down on what is a pretty hot day.

There is clearly a positive impact of that, as there will be from going into the small pool United had installed next to their training pitch at UCLA,

Time in it was strictly controlled but it was another indication to what extent footballers are pushing the boundaries in a search for marginal gains.

    Real Madrid 0-0 Manchester United

Karim Benzema beats a man and thinks about getting a shot away but he's closed down by Eric Bailly. Andreas Pereira, best player out there so far, then does well to beat two men and keep the ball on the right wing.

Memories of John Aldridge as the players have a drinks break in the intense Californian sun. Some Manchester United staff drape some sort of towels on their players too.

The game is only really being played at walking pace but it is properly hot.

I can't believe I missed the fact that the teams shook hands with Ronald McDonald before kick-off. Surreal!

  19. Postpublished at 25 mins

    Real Madrid 0-0 Manchester United

Real Madrid now dominating possession but there's very little in the way of goalmouth action to report. Both clubs getting minutes under their belts, and that's about all so far.

Real Madrid and Manchester United are on the same pitch today and they have been training pretty close to each other over the past week or so.

Both clubs have been using the impressive facilities at the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, with their pitches less than 200 yards apart.

One day last week, Marcelo was spotted with his family at the hotel United's staff are staying in.
