Mason Holgate has had Sergio Aguero on lockdown for much of this match.

The Argentine is one-on-one with the Everton defender, but once again Holgate comes out on top by clearing the ball.

    Experienced head on young shoulders.

The City fans scream "backpass" as Leighton Baines makes a sliding challenge on Raheem Sterling and Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford picks the ball up.

It was a tackle, not a pass.

It was about 15 minutes in and Rooney hadn't touched the ball. He was getting frustrated. But when Everton stared to grow into the game, so did Rooney. He dropped deeper and became a calming influence in midfield.

    Change for City.

Raheem Sterling replaces Gabriel Jesus for the 10 men.

City boss Pep Guardiola is in the tunnel showing fourth official Michael Oliver what Kyle Walker did to deserve a red.

Guardiola barges his shoulder into Oliver's chest.

    Easy.

Gareth Southgate is also sitting comfortably in the Etihad's posh seats. And there is plenty for the England boss to analyse as he assesses his options ahead of next month's World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia.

Everton have EIGHT Englishmen starting tonight, their highest tally in a Premier League game since Boxing Day 1997.

Toffees youngsters Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Mason Holgate and Tom Davies will all have caught Southgate's eye in the opening half an hour.

I've been really disappointed with Manchester City, they have not shown much going forward. Everton have been magnificent at the back and they got aa goal which they probably deserved. City got a little bit frustrated and lost discipline.

  9. The numberspublished at 20:56 British Summer Time 21 August 2017

    • Premier League games to 200 goals: Alan Shearer - 306, Wayne Rooney - 462.

    • Alan Shearer (11) is also the only player to have scored more Premier League goals against Man City than Rooney (9)

    • Alan Shearer was 51 days younger than Wayne Rooney when he scored his 200th Premier League goal.

Wayne Rooney scores a goal in back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since......April.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who is here tonight, used to say Rooney was at his best when he had a few games under his belt, and also that the striker tended to score in bursts.

Even those closest to Rooney accept this move to Everton has given him a new lease of life.

Pep Guardiola is furious, flinging his arms in the air.

The Manchester City players are not happy with the Everton bench because it was Duncan Ferguson who sprinted to the fourth official.

It probably wasn't a yellow card but it was a silly thing for Kyle Walker to do just after he was booked.

He's not looking at the ball, he's looking at the man. That's probaly done for him. There's no elbow raised by Walker, it is his shoulder.

Boos at Etihad at half time, aimed towards the referee.

To be honest, Robert Madley has not had a good game.

  14. RED CARD TO MAN CITYpublished at 44 mins

    Man City 0-1 Everton

Two quick bookings for Kyle Walker, the £50m man is OFF.

I am not sure about this one.

Walker is looking at a high ball in the air, takes a quick peep at Dominic Calvert-Lewin behind him and catches the Everton man with a brush of the arm. It is not an elbow.

The Everton coaches are off their seats and are not happy with the challenge, referee Robert Madley agrees and issues Walker a second yellow card.

Two minutes between those bookings, City down to 10 men.

    Great challenge.

Gabriel Jesus gets forward and lays on Kyle Walker, but Leighton Baines gets back with an inch-perfect tackle to thwart the former Tottenham man.

Wayne Rooney then gives the ball away in the middle of the park, straight to David Silva, who finds Jesus, but the Brazilian volleys at Jordan Pickford.

    Man City 0-1 Everton

Kevin de Bruyne at the heart of everything good by Manchester City.

He plays a pass towards Gabriel Jesus in the box, who is edged off the ball and onto the turf by Michael Keane, and the home crowd cry for a penalty.

    Stop begging.

    Rooney

Rooney is only the second player to reach that landmark. He now needs only another 60 to equal Alan Shearer's record.

It was all made by a mistake from Leroy Sane on that left hand side, he tries to pass it back to Vincent Kompany and misses the ball.

Then it is all about the run of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

It is a good contact from Wayne Rooney but you have to say it went straight at Ederson. You have to expect your keeper to save it.

GOAL - Man City 0-1 Evertonpublished at 35 mins

    Wayne Rooney

    Everton

    It had to be him!

Leroy Sane gives the ball away on the right and is punished.

Mason Holgate is the man that picks him off, passing it to Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box.

Brilliant composure shown by the England youth player, cutting inside and passing it to Wayne Rooney.

The former Manchester United man takes it first time, a low shot which comes off Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, onto the post and into the net.

Poor goalkeeping, it was straight at him

That is Rooney's 200th Premier League goal and he wheels off with his hands cupped to his ears in front of the City fans.
