It says a lot about the multi-cultural state of the Premier League that there are more Brazilians (3) in the Man City starting XI than there are English players (2). Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden are on the bench.

Everton are almost retro, with eight Englishman in their starting line-up.

It is fair to assume Wayne Rooney's return to the Etihad Stadium will not be greeted warmly by the home fans.

However, Manchester City will be wary of Everton's new old striker.

For during his time at Manchester United, Rooney scored seven goals at the Etihad Stadium in all competitions.

    Wayne Rooney

Everton front man Wayne Rooney has eight Premier League goals against Manchester City. Only Alan Shearer, with 11, has a better record.

Also, Rooney needs just one more goal to become only the second player, after Shearer, to score 200 Premier League goals.

    Overhead-kick at the Etihad, anyone?

    Phil Neville

If Manchester City keep Vincent Kompany fit and he plays in every Premier League game, they will win the Premier League. He is that important. You saw it at the back end of last season.

    Man City

    A bit of a shambles.

City have made an amendment to their original line-up.

They actually make one change from the side that beat Brighton last weekend. Leroy Sane comes in for Danilo on the left.

  7. 'Solid Everton'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 21 August 2017

    Phil Neville
Former Everton defender on BBC Radio 5 live

Everton have brought more energy and legs into midfield with that team selection, but I'm a bit surprised Davy Klaassen isn't playing because when you are coming to the Etihad you need to keep the ball.

But in Tom Davies, Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gueye they have got people who can get around the pitch and go man-to-man with David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne.

It is a solid-looking Everton side.

They are not done just yet.

Last week, Manchester City had an £18m bid for defender Jonny Evans rejected by West Brom.

Talks had been ongoing for the past couple of weeks about the Northern Ireland international, with City having had two offers turned down for a player that West Brom say is not for sale.

Meanwhile, City midfielder Samir Nasri has joined Turkish side Antalyaspor on a two-year contract, for a fee which could rise to 3.5m euros (£3.2m).

The France player, 30, signed from Arsenal for £25m in 2011 and made 129 Premier League appearances, winning two league titles.

Gregory Mandapat‏: The big clubs spend early on overpriced top talent. The smaller clubs wait till the end of the window to do business with less.

Patrick Hallam‏: Potential problem of big spending is a big crash. Boom then bust. Fans would end up paying for it.

Manchester City mean business this season, having spent an eye-watering £215m on new acquisitions to snatch back the Premier League title.

Opponents Everton, though, want a slice of the action, shelling out over £140m themselves in order to try and break the top-flight's monopoly.
