City get a corner and the ball drops to Sergio Aguero on the right edge, but the Argentine strikes a left-footed shot wide of goal.

  2. YELLOW CARDpublished at 8 mins

    Man City 0-0 Everton

Morgan Schneiderlin is going to be walking on thin ice for the rest of this contest.

The former Manchester United midfielder goes in late with a sliding challenge on Sergio Aguero, bringing down the City striker.

A poor challenge and a worthy yellow given by referee Robert Madley.

Both sides are starting with similar systems, although Everton will be more like a back five, while City have their three centre-backs and the two wing-backs flying forward. I think Everton will play deep.

    Could have flown in.

Kevin de Bruyne whips in a dangerous free-kick which Wayne Rooney has a hack at a mis-cues towards his own goal, but Jordan Pickford shows sharp reflexes to dive down to right and collect.

Jonny Evans grew up as a Manchester United supporter so he will have to be very careful if he comes here to Manchester City. It is hard to hide your affection for your former club. But it is too good an opportunity for him to turn down.

He will fit into the system because he can play football, has great technique and has experience. With the number of games they will play, and the fact they will have to rest Vincent Kompany in some games, he gives them stability and experience to play alongside John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi.

John Stones is playing in the middle of the three Manchester City centre-backs but has to come across to the left to Dominic Calvert-Lewis.

The Everton youngster attempts an ambitious effort from out wide which flashes narrowly wide of Ederson's right-hand post.

Good effort, it had the City keeper scrambling.

    Man City 0-0 Everton

City defender Nicolas Otamendi gallops forward and thinks he can catch Jordan Pickford out with a long-range strike, but it is straight into the hands of the Everton goalkeeper.

    Nice early tester for Pickford.

The last game of matchday two is under way, I think.

I can't see anything because of the smoke caused by the fireworks but I did hear the referee's whistle.

"What an enticing prospect this is for Manchester City's first home match.

"After a so far fruitful summer transfer window, every time they emerge from their futuristic new circular dressing room at the Etihad Stadium this season they will probably begin as favourites to win.

"However, Everton will arrive with a bit of mystery about them, plus new club record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson.

"They've started with four wins out of four in all competitions without conceding a goal, but after this in the league they play Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United.

"So we're about to find out what this new-look Everton are made of."

Everton and Manchester City will both wear shirts featuring Manchester’s iconic worker bee emblem when the two sides today.

The Premier League fixture at the Etihad Stadium will be Manchester City’s first home game following the terrorist attack in Manchester in May and, in a show of unity and togetherness, the iconic bee symbol will also incorporate the red and yellow colours of Catalonia following Thursday’s attack in Barcelona.

Everton took their spending for the summer past £130m when they signed Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea last week.

But Ronald Koeman is not done yet.

Apparently, Everton are still in the market for a striker to replace Romelu Lukaku, and a left-sided defender, although doubts have been expressed as to whether Koeman will succeed in the latter aim.

    Everton

Everton boss Ronald Koeman, speaking to Sky Sports: "We need to control the game. We need to defend well and for that I make the decision to play with three centre-backs against two strikers. We will do our best to get a good result but you have to believe it.

"Every Premier League game is a difficult one. We have a tough week coming up with three away games in six days."

  17. 'We have to be stronger here'published at 19:48 British Summer Time 21 August 2017

Man City v Everton (20:00 BST)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports about the need to win more at home: "It is so important. I think we were the first or second best team away but at home was not good enough to fight for the title so we have to try to be stronger here.

"We were solid in the last month in our games - pre-season and against Brighton. We try to have people with a sense of goal and so I've put together Jesus and Aguero.

"Everton bought a lot of good players, they have a good team and are so physical."

They have been busy at the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Tonight's game against Everton gives Manchester City a chance to show off the improvements they have made to the main stand this summer.

    This includes new dressing rooms.

And, having had a tour on Friday, I can confirm if manager Pep Guardiola wants to get his point across, and stands on the City badge shown in the picture, his voice will boom around the room.

And, fans who have shelled out for Tunnel Club hospitality will see the players as they head on to the pitch, and leave it for that matter - pay close attention if someone is unlucky enough to get sent off.

At the end, they will even be able to watch them conducting their post-match TV news conferences.

It is not quite as open as sports events are in the United States but is about as 'access all areas' as you are likely to get in England.

Ricky Williams: Nothing will change unless what is spent is capped. You don't just play for the players talent, you pay for the brand. Nothing will change, will only get worse!

Owen Broadhurst: I don't blame any player for earning the amount they do, obscene to most of us yes but they don't make up their contracts if anyone in any walk of life was offered that kind of money to do their job of course they would take it.

Kye Marshall: How come no one has issues with actors earning 20million a movie? Lewis Hamilton earning 650grand a week net? Easy target are footballers... if you don't like the amount of money in the number one global sport in the world then stop watching.

    Sergio Aguero

City striker Sergio Aguero needs one more goal to become the leading non-European goalscorer in Premier League history.

He is currently level with former Aston Villa and Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke on 123.

However, Aguero has failed to score in his last six Premier League appearances against Everton, his longest drought against a current top-flight side.
