    Everton 0-0 Tottenham

Sandro has the first effort of the game. It comes from a good run by Cuco Martina, who beats Ben Davies for pace and drives over a low cross that the sliding Sandro puts past the near post.

Looks like Martina has the beating of Davies on the right. One to milk for the home side.

  2. YELLOW CARDpublished at 5 mins

    Everton 0-0 Tottenham

The home fans aren't happy at a challenge from Jan Vertonghen on Rooney. Looks fine to me, though.

Not so the challenge by Ashley Williams on Harry Kane as he drags the striker down to prevent him getting away into Everton territory. Yellow card.

    Everton 0-0 Tottenham

He doesn't always appear to be up for it, but Moussa Sissoko may well fancy this. It is only his fourth start of the calendar year and it comes against a side he almost joined prior to his £30m shift to Tottenham.

  4. Postpublished at 1 min

    Everton 0-0 Tottenham

Almost an early chance for Wayne Rooney as Gylfi Sigurdsson's cross from the left is just a yard above him as he rose to try and head.

Goodison is a great place to play football on a Saturday afternoon. I think this will be the toughest game Spurs will have had for a while.

The crowd will get behind the team and behind Wayne Rooney. I think you will see a captain's performance from him today.

Tottenham have had 62 shots so far this season, more than any other team in the Premier League after three games.

Harry Kane has accounted for 24 of those shots, but no goals yet. He never scores in August though.

This match is where it all began for Ronald Koeman on Merseyside, but his Everton team look very different from the one that drew with Spurs at Goodison just over a year ago.

Ross Barkley played and scored for starters. After his off-the-field discussions with Barkley and, of course, Wayne Rooney this week, Koeman will be hoping for some on-the-field headlines as Everton continue their challenging start to the league campaign.

Tottenham have a week away from Wembley questions and theories and go in search of a fourth consecutive win on the road for the first time since January 2014.

Harry Kane has seen August pass and can look forward to September and continue his search for his 100th goal for the club. You get the sense anything could happen in this one.

First cheer of the afternoon at Goodison. They have just announced over the PA the full-time score at the Etihad. Would it surprise you to hear the 5-0 scoreline was well received?

Tottenham have thrust themselves into the mix for worst bit of kit of this season. Their training tops - a blue, grey and white collage thing - are a true work of art. GCSE art.

I know Ross Barkley well, he loves the game. He is passionate about training, being involved. He will not lose his way. From a distance I am trying to see how he can reverse the situation. He is a young player who has already been to a World Cup, he has not become a bad player overnight.

Ross has the mentality to come good again and become important again. I am looking forward to that moment.

  15. No Rosspublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 9 September 2017

    Everton v Tottenham (15:00 BST)

One other line worth noting from those teams... no Ross Barkley, who is out for at least six weeks with a hamstring injury. Tottenham were one of the clubs reported to be keen on signing him this summer. It remains to be seen when we'll see him again in the Premier League.

Former Everton boss Roberto Martinez, now Belgium coach, has faith that the midfielder can come good again...

    Everton v Tottenham (15:00 BST)

Everton's Morgan Schneiderlin returns to the starting XI after a ban, replacing Tom Davies in midfield. Davy Klaassen has been passed fit so also comes back in, with defender Mason Holgate dropping out. Phil Jagielka is on the bench. Cuco Martina is at right-back.

Jordan Pickford is in goal despite concerns over his fitness and Wayne Rooney starts in attack. New signing Nikola Vlasic is on the bench.

Everton: Pickford, Keane, Williams, Martina, Sigurdsson, Schneiderlin, Gueye, Baines, Rooney, Klaassen, Sandro.

Subs: Jagielka, Mirallas, Stekelenburg, Davies, Vlasic, Calvert-Lewin, Holgate.

Tottenham hand a full debut to defender Davinson Sanchez, with Mousa Dembele dropping to the bench. This suggests three at the back. Their only other change sees Moussa Sissoko come in for Son Heung-min.

New signings Serge Aurier and Fernando Llorente are on the bench.

Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris, Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Sanchez, Sissoko, Alli, Eriksen, Kane.

Subs: Son, Vorm, Llorente, Dembele, Aurier, Winks, Walker-Peters.

    Now then.

Well, this should be a decent game, right?

Last season's runners-up against a team who have spent a fortune to try and force their way into the top four.

I won't say any more, I might jinx it.
