Everton v Hajduk Split (20:05 BST)

Once a Blue, always a Blue. That's what they say down at Goodison, isn't it?

We're not sure Gylfi Sigurdsson was brought up a Toffees fan as a kid, but there is photographic evidence of Everton's new record signing donning a training top once worn by the likes of Richard Gough, Mark Pembridge and Phil Jevons.

The Icelander visited the club as an 11-year-old, according to the Liverpool Echo newspaper,, external training with the academy for a week and posing in front of a statue of legendary Toffees striker Dixie Dean.

What a player to come in though...

With Gylfi Sigurdsson, Davy Klaassen, Michael Keane, Wayne Rooney, Sandro and Jordan Pickford on board, Everton have spent big this summer.

But what realistically should their aims be? Is the top four always going to be out of reach? Should they focus on winning a cup? This one?

Everton v Hajduk Split (20:05 BST)

"We don't reserve people for Monday," Koeman said earlier this week. "We like to be part of Europe. We will put a strong team in."

Of their opponents, who are second in the Croatian table after five games, Koeman said: "We know a lot about them. My brother [and assistant] Erwin watched their game away to Dinamo Zagreb [on 6 August].

"We have videos of them. They do not have any secrets from us and we do not have any from them. They are physically strong at the back."

    Everton

Everton manager Ronald Koeman promised he would name a strong side tonight and not have half an eye on Monday's Premier League game at Manchester City.

He's been true to his word.

Wayne Rooney leads the line with Sandro missing through injury, Kevin Mirallas and Ademola Lookman joining England's record scorer in the front three.

Right-back Cuco Martina also starts as Koeman makes three changes from Saturday's opening Premier League win against Stoke, skipper Phil Jagielka - who turns 35 today - Dominic Calvert-Lewin also dropping out.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, as we've already told you, is not fit enough to make his Toffees bow.

Everton finally completed the club-record signing of midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City for a fee believed to be about £45m last night, but he does not feature tonight.

Sigurdsson's transfer fee eclipses Everton's previous record of £31.8m to Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku in 2014.

"Hopefully I will continue to create goals and score goals for the team and contribute to the kind of success we're seeking at the club," he said.

"This is an ambitious club and it is clear we are moving in a really good direction. The most important thing is that this team keeps winning games and climbing the table - and does that throughout the season."

The Iceland international scored nine goals and made 13 assists last season to help the Swans avoid relegation.

Hajduk also played Spurs in 1991, winning at home but being knocked out by a 2-0 defeat at White Hart Lane

Hajduk Split came third in the Croatian top flight last season and their best runs in Europe have both been ended by English sides.

It was Leeds back in 1973 who won in the semi-finals of the now defunct Cup Winners' Cup, while Spurs knocked them out at the same stage of the 1984 Uefa Cup.

Spurs went on to win the trophy - Leeds didn't.

One round down, one to go.

Everton are two matches away from a potential place in the Europa League group stage and tonight they face Croatian opposition.

    A banana skin? You bet.

    Should they qualify? You bet.

A nice comfortable first-leg lead is exactly what the doctor orders for tonight...
