Summary

  • Stoke have only won one of their last seven matches in all competitions

  • Defeat for Bournemouth would equal their worst ever start (W1, D1, L7) to a league campaign

    Andrew Surman

Great finish Andrew Surman! He doesn't score that many but this is a peach. The ball is rolled back to him by Stanislas and he strokes the ball into the bottom corner.

Just the fifth league goal of the season for the Cherries!

    Stoke 0-0 Bournemouth

In contrast to the team graphic from earlier, it would appear that Ibe is on the right and Junior Stanislas on the left for the Cherries. They may well swap between them over the 90 minutes. Pesky wingers.

    Stoke 0-0 Bournemouth

Oh, clumsy stuff from Jordon Ibe provokes shouts for a penalty from the home fans. His first touch, in his own box, was poor, giving Erik Pieters chance to nip in. The two come together, sending Pieters sprawling but the referee gives Ibe the benefit of the doubt.

    Stoke 0-0 Bournemouth

Kurt Zouma is quite the unit. He uses his considerable strength to hold off Lys Mousset and clear the ball from danger. Still no chances to tell you about.

    Stoke 0-0 Bournemouth

Looks like both sides are having to adjust to these conditions early on. Not a sniff of a chance yet. In fact, both teams are struggling to judge a pass. Stoke's are too short, Bournemouth's too long. Damn you, Brian!

    Stoke 0-0 Bournemouth

If you're Bournemouth here, you have to be considering a few efforts from 40 yards. With the wind behind you it'd be like a missile.

Jack Butland is kicking into the wind first half. His first punt loops back and lands in his own half again. This is going to be fun.

  10. Stoke City v Bournemouth: MOTD's Commentator's Notespublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 21 October 2017

    Martin Fisher
    Match of the Day commentator

"A bottom-four clash between two sides already fearing that a gruelling relegation battle lies ahead.

"For Stoke this game can't come quickly enough. After their mauling at Manchester City, it will have been a long week on the training ground for the players, who will be champing at the bit to get it out of their system.

"On paper Bournemouth represent perfect opposition. Beaten six times already, they've yet to pick up an away point.

"Eddie Howe has come through similarly bad spells before and won't sacrifice his footballing principles to get through this one. A repeat of last year's 1-0 win in the Potteries would be very timely."

Match of the Day commentator Martin Fisher has just been saying "1-2, 1-2, 1-2" into his microphone. He's either testing it or making a prediction.

Speaking of Martin, here is his pre-match preview...

So, a team who have only won one of their last seven matches in all competitions against one have lost four consecutive Premier League away games. It doesn't scream instant classic.

However, these two sides are at the wrong end of the table and need a win badly and the conditions are a tad on the tricky side.

Forget about Man City v Burnley, this is where it's at. Honest.

    Stoke v Bournemouth (15:00 BST)

    Mark LawrensonImage source, BBC Sport

From looking at their squads, I did not expect either of these teams to struggle this season, but they are both in the bottom four.

Stoke had the temerity to score twice against Manchester City when they were 3-0 down last weekend but they were not back in the game for long, and ended up conceding seven.

Bournemouth lost again, 1-0 at Tottenham, but at least they put in a better defensive performance.

Of the two teams, I am more worried about the Cherries.

They have some very good players, and with signings like Jermain Defoe, I was expecting more progress from them in their third season in the top flight, but it has not happened for them yet.

It is brilliant that Eddie Howe is allowed to just get on with his job without being told he is going to lose it, but he needs his side to start playing the way they are capable of, and quickly.

    Lawro's prediction: 1-1

    Stoke v Bournemouth (15:00 BST)

Stoke have conceded the most in the division (18 - joint with Crystal Palace). However, Bournemouth have scored the second fewest goals. Could be a case of the resistible force versus the moveable object.

I can also tell you that it is wet and windy in Stoke, just like much of the rest of the country.

    Play the conditions, lads.

  17. Team news (part two)published at 14:38 British Summer Time 21 October 2017

    Stoke v Bournemouth (15:00 BST)

To add to that team news, Cherries boss Eddie Howe has confirmed that Joshua King is absent through illness, while Jermain Defoe has a hamstring problem. Two big misses.

    Stoke v Bournemouth (15:00 BST)

Joe Allen returns to the Stoke midfield in one of three changes from the team that lost 7-2 at Manchester City. The Welshman replaces Xherdan Shaqiri, who has a sprained ankle. The other two changes come in defence, where Glen Johnson and Ryan Shawcross replace Tom Edwards and Kevin Wimmer.

Bournemouth also make three changes. All of them involve attacking players coming in. Jordon Ibe, Lys Mousset and Benik Afobe are selected with defender Steve Cook and midfielder Dan Gosling dropping to the bench. Joshua King is missing from the squad entirely. Striker Callum Wilson is on the bench. His last game was on 31 January.

  19. Long weekpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 21 October 2017

    Stoke v Bournemouth (15:00 BST)

I imagine every time Mark Hughes has looked at the clock this week has been seven to...

This weekend won't have come quick enough for the Stoke boss and his players as they try to scrub themselves clean of THAT result last Saturday at a merciless, unrelenting Manchester City.

There will be one word rattling round Bournemouth heads: backlash.
