Almost. Tom Lawrence breaks and has Gareth Bale for company. It is a simple pass to release the Real Madrid forward but Lawrence gets it all wrong and Austria are able to intercept and end the attack.

In the ball goes from Aaron Ramsey but Marko Arnautovic sticks out a boot to ensure the ball doesn't reach a Welsh head.

Positive start, though, from the hosts.

The roar when Gareth Bale simply touches the ball is deafening.

The fact that his shot dribbled tamely wide has done nothing to diminish the noise inside the Cardiff City Stadium.

With one sharp blast of the whistle we are under way.

Gareth Bale led the encouragement in the pre-match huddle. Presumably, he was saying: "don't worry lads, I've got this".

When the names of Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale were read out, screams of excitement echoed around the stadium from the youngsters already here.

Richard and Dylan have got their flags, they've got their hope and all they need now is a performance to match the nerves, excitement and anticipation you can feel inside the ground.

The next four games suit us as a nation. I think Wales have played well without getting the results. We have been pegged back four out of the five times we have taken the lead. That's slightly unfortunate but we've not seen the games out right until the last kick of the game.

I don't think Wales are playing badly, they just need to turn those draws into wins. It's must-win territory now.

Wales qualifiers in Cardiff have become big occasions in recent years and, with this game selling out weeks ago, tonight should be no different.

The Cardiff City Stadium is about three quarters full with 10 minutes to go before kick-off and, as the sense of anticipation grows, so too does the noise in here.

Each fan has been given a Welsh flag, so that should make for a striking sight when they're all being waved when the players come out.

    Programme notes

So it's a crucial night at a sold-out Cardiff City Stadium; their last home game was almost 12 months ago.

    Wales just don't do friendlies.

After qualifying draws in Dublin and Belgrade, Chris Coleman knows the importance of this one.

"I have said from day one that we needed to be there or thereabouts going into the final few matches and that's exactly where we are," he writes in his programme notes. "The support we have received has been immense and passionate and it will be the same tonight."

Wales have a bad habit of squandering leads.

In their five previous games - all draws - they have gone ahead in four. The only other match ended goalless.

It's something captain and centre-back Ashley Williams wants to put right.

    Spain v Italy (19:45 BST)

Something you don't often see in Europe - two of the giants of world football meeting in a qualifying game.

Well it's happening tonight as Spain take on Italy at the Bernabeu. Only one of them will qualify automatically for the World Cup.

Real Madrid's man of the moment Marco Asensio starts for Spain, who do not field a recognised striker.

Gianluigi Buffon wins his 170th Italy cap.

We have dedicated live text commentary of that game here.
