  1. Postpublished at 30 mins

    Everton 0-0 Huddersfield

We tick past the 30-minute mark and Scott Malone - on a booking - stands tall to tackle Aaron Lennon. Huddersfield try to build through midfield with Aaron Mooy constantly on the ball.

Everton get a tackle in but the ball again finds its way to Mooy... low cross... cleared. The home fans are grumbling though and aren't enjoying this all too much.

Forget Sam Allardyce for a second, Sammy Lee is already making friends in his first game on the Everton bench.

He’s just had a peacekeeping cuddle with David Wagner but he’s been in his ear plenty and is clearly bang up for this, bobbing up and down like a maniac.

All very routine at Goodison Park. Lots of energy but little in the way of quality.

New Everton manager Sam Allardyce is posted in his technical area in a long dark overcoat, earpiece and chewing furiously. Just being Big Sam really.

The energetic stuff is being provided by his assistant Sammy Lee. A real little bundle of energy. Some of the players have not been as lively.

The highlight so far has been three utterly horrendous set pieces from Gylfi Sigurdsson. Allardyce will not like that.

    Everton 0-0 Huddersfield

A light increase in application and intensity from the home side as Dominic Calvert-Lewin connects with a set-piece delivery only to be flagged offside. His effort and the Cuco Martina shot at least get the fans singing properly though.

  6. GREAT SAVE!published at 26 mins

    Everton 0-0 Huddersfield

The game has its first real attempt of meaning as Cuco Martina gets forward from left-back and latches on to a loose ball. First-time hit, palmed away by Jonas Lossl.

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 23 mins

    Everton 0-0 Huddersfield

Make that three bookings in three minutes. Tom Davies is late with a tackle in midfield and the man sporting an Alice band is in the book. In fairness, he did take a fair old chunk out of Elias Kachunga.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 22 mins

    Everton 0-0 Huddersfield

We have two bookings in as many minutes. Scott Malone was carded for his foul on Aaron Lennon and now Jonjoe Kenny gets the same after halting a Huddersfield break with a foul.

  9. Postpublished at 21 mins

    Everton 0-0 Huddersfield

As we pass 20 minutes you can see the away side are bettering possession and edging territory.

For the first time Everton see a little space and Aaron Lennon attempts to dribble into it, only to be fouled by Scott Malone. Everton free-kick in the Huddersfield half.

Wayne Rooney is a wrecking ball. He slams a shot from 20 yards which knocks Danny Williams off his feet and as the deflected ball loops into the air he chases it, jumps and glances Scott Malone with an elbow. It lacked intent but may leave a mark.

Sam Allardyce loads another chewing gum.

If Huddersfield are to prevent an immediate return to the Championship, their return in front of goal may well have to increase.

They have scored just two goals in their last five matches. So far this season, Laurent Depoitre, Aaron Mooy and Steve Mounie all share the top-scorer tag on just two.

Only twice this season have David Wagner's side hit two goals in a league game. Can they open up a bit more? Or would doing so lead to defensive problems?

Former Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare is in the stands, he's now of course part of the staff at Everton. He's muttering into a microphone, presumably into the ear of someone on Everton's bench.

Down near the touchline Sammy Lee is up and doing Sam Allardyce's shouting for him as play pauses for an injury. It's fair to say that so far very little has happened here. Drab.

  13. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Everton 0-0 Huddersfield

Everton have everyone behind the ball and as Aaron Lennon pressures his man the away side go long. Elias Kachunga is on the right flank and tries to cross but he doesn't wrap his foot around the delivery and only finds the stand behind the goal.

It's very competitive and no one really has time to breathe out there. Aaron Mooy pressures Idrissa Gueye and blocks a clearance, goal kick Everton.

The game needs to settle a little but the away side will be content as they have just about edged things so far and after some patient passing, they win a free-kick in midfield as Danny Williams is fouled.

Fighting talk from David Wagner this week... fighting talk indeed.

"Usually, especially tactically, it isn't nice if a manager of an opponent changes shortly before you play them because usually then you can put all your tactics in the waste basket," said Wagner.

"This time, because it's Sam Allardyce and everybody is aware about how he usually sets his teams up, this isn't a major problem."

Anyone else think Wagner is expecting Kevin Davies and Kevin Nolan to turn out?

Confident stuff from Elias Kachunga down the right flank and he digs out a cross which floats just wide of the back post. It was enough to set a few home hearts racing.

  17. Postpublished at 9 mins

    Everton 0-0 Huddersfield

It's sedate. Not quite the feisty start we maybe expected from a side keen to impress their new manager and bouncing from a 4-0 midweek win.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin makes a nothing ball into something by giving chase and forcing Jonas Lossl to clear into touch. The home side win another free-kick from wide but for the second time Wayne Rooney crosses into the hands of the keeper.

If you are just joining us, Sam Allardyce got a big shout out from the man on the tannoy and was welcomed by warm applause shortly before kick-off.

His team concede a corner as Laurent Depoitre makes a nuisance of himself. In it comes but Everton will clear from the hands of Jordan Pickford.

Sam Allardyce jobs are a bit like Star Wars films, every year around Christmas you know there’s a good chance of a new one.

He got a great reception from the fans - he waited so long to make his entrance that Huddersfield were ready to kick off!

Just joining us? No sweat... here are your teams.

Tom Davies will be OK in midfield for Everton after some treatment and we are back under way. Mason Holgate tries to clear long but he gets under it and performs an up and under which would be better placed at Twickenham. It brings pressure and the away side win a free-kick.
