    Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

Saints have learned from Manchester United's tactics last week, pressing and harrying the Arsenal defence whenever the visitors are deep in their own half.

This time it's great work from Nathan Redmond to win a throw deep in opposition territory, before Granit Xhaka gives away a free-kick in a promising position for Saints.

    Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

Mesut Ozil finds Hector Bellerin out right, with the Spaniard finally able to run at the Saints defence.

He skips past one and into the area, but Virgil van Dijk does really well, getting across to play the ball off Bellerin for a goal-kick.

    Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

Sead Kolasinac swings in a cross that Fraser Forster comes and punches clear, but Arsenal keep up the pressure and remain in Saints' half.

Not too much to threaten the hosts' defence yet, though.

That's a touch better, Aaron Ramsey with his back to goal and swivelling away from his man, but the first-time effort is straight at Forster.

Love of Football: I concluded a long time ago this team never learns! Arsenal starting the same way they did against United!

Eyobele: What a striker that boy Austin is when fit!

    Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

Ozil and Bellerin combine brilliantly in a tight spot to bring Arsenal out of defence and swing it left.

But Sanchez's ball in is headed out by Yoshida and Xhaka is then penalised for a needless handball. Flashes from Arsenal but sloppy overall.

Oh, now Stephens with a handball as he tries to stop Yoshida's over-hit pass going out. He almost tried to catch that.

Southampton have started the brighter and should be 2-0 up, but Arsenal are feeling their way back into this.

    Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

Saints go up the other end and win a corner but it's over-hit and Arsenal streak forward with numbers.

Lacazette and Sanchez link up, the ball going back to the Frenchman but they've dallied too much and the Saints defence rally to nip the ball out for a corner.

Nothing doing for the Gunners from the resulting set-piece. A waste.

  8. CLOSE!published at 17 mins

    Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

First chance for Arsenal as Alexis Sanchez gets it forward into the area and Alexandre Lacazette brings it down.

The France striker can't quite get it out of his feet and his slightly tame effort is straight at Fraser Forster in the end.

    Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

Arsenal camped just outside the Saints area, but Laurent Koscielny sells Alexandre Lacazette short and the hosts nip in.

Nathan Redmond goes flying down the left, but he can't get it under control and allows the ball to just drift over the touchline.

Terrific feet from Romeu to get away from his marker in midfield but his pass is poor and Arsenal can counter...

But Redmond does a brilliant job, tracking back to rob Bellerin of possession. Saints look revitalised here.

Ieuan Care: Charlie Austin you beauty. The Arsenal panto keeps on giving.

Danny Hughes: Sunday league defending from Arsenal, what is going on?!

Dennis Ethan: Charlie Austin could have had 3 goals by now, Arsenal defence no show so far

    Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

Arsenal finally get hold of the ball for an extended period, swinging it left and right in front of the Saints back line.

All very intricate but not enough penetration and eventually Mesut Ozil clips a poor pass over the top that Fraser Forster can easily gather.

    Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

Again, Redmond streaks past Bellerin and plays in a wicked, curling cross for Austin.

The Saints striker has left his marker behind but his first-time effort rebounds off the post.

Ah, he was offside anyway. Make that another huge let off for Arsenal, who have been woeful at the start of this game.

    Stirring stuff from Saints.

Nathan Redmond now plays in Charlie Austin down the right and for the third time in as many minutes the Saints striker is bearing down on Arsenal's goal.

This time, he's marginally offside. A big let-off for the visitors.

  16. CLOSE!published at 5 mins

    Southampton 1-0 Arsenal

Arsenal could easily be two down inside five minutes here.

Charlie Austin again finds acres of space down the right and is played through clear on goal.

His early strike is well saved by Petr Cech diving to his right.

The Gunners need to get a grip.

    Charlie Austin

    Superb.

Per Mertesacker plays a loose pass out of defence straight to Charlie Austin, who plays it ahead to Dusan Tadic and surges forward.

Tadic holds it up and then plays a sublime reverse pass into Austin's path, with the striker calmly clipping it past Petr Cech.

Clinical from Saints but another woeful early defensive error from Arsenal.

A lot of people saying what does Jack Wilshere need to do to start. The lad has struggled with injuries I don’t think he’s ready to play two games a week. Good shout by Wenger to rest him especially with a game coming up in midweek.

Walcott's career flashing by him. Needs to be brave and jump ship. The World Cup must be in the back of his mind or has he settled for a comfortable life?
