Zlatan Ibrahmovic amazed everyone with the speed of his comeback from a serious cruciate knee ligament injury.

But the veteran Swede has been a shadow of his former self and the fact Jose Mourinho took him off at half-time with Manchester United desperately searching for a way back into this game says it all.

At 36, maybe making a full recovery and getting back to his best is one challenge beyond even this self proclaimed lion.

  2. Postpublished at 62 mins

    Manchester United 1-2 Burnley

United striker Romelu Lukaku has not had a great game - with or without Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the pitch. He gets on the end of an enticing cross from the left, but cannot direct his header on target.

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 61 mins

    Manchester United 1-2 Burnley

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has looked very fired up since coming on and he earns a booking for his reaction after Martin Atkinson blows up for his foul on Phil Bardsley.

I should tell you that Luke Shaw has also been shown a yellow card, for a foul on Steven Defour - but that was before United scored their goal.

  4. Postpublished at 59 mins

    Manchester United 1-2 Burnley

United are playing with more fluency now, and Ashley Young in particular is flying. He earns a free-kick on the right of the area, which Paul Pogba takes quickly as United look to keep the pressure up. Burnley are ready for it, however.

What a first-time finish this is, to put his side right back in this game (if indeed they were ever out of it).

Another Ashley Young cross finds Jesse Lingard darting into the box, and, under pressure, he cleverly swivels to flick the ball past Nick Pope and into the bottom corner.

    What the... !?!

    How does this stay out?

United come forward again and Ashley Young drills in a low cross that finds Jesse Lingard right in front of goal - and practically underneath the crossbar... he looks to slot home but Nick Pope somehow blocks it with his head and the ball bounces up and hits the bar twice, before bouncing to safety.

  7. Postpublished at 48 mins

    Manchester United 0-2 Burnley

A brief delay while Burnley captain Ben Mee has treatment. He looks like he will be ok - and Clarets boss Sean Dyche gives him a round of applause by way of encouragement.

  8. Postpublished at 46 mins

    Manchester United 0-2 Burnley

Jose Mourinho's men start the second half on the front foot, forcing another corner, that Burnley eventually clear, followed by a Paul Pogba pot-shot from 25 yards, that clears Nick Pope's crossbar.

  9. KICK-OFFpublished at 16:04 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2017

United have not created enough despite all that possession and on the whole they have been playing in front of Burnley.

    Man Utd 0-2 Burnley

United have had 68% of possession and have had plenty of touches in the Burnley area (on the left), but they have nothing to show for it so far.

Glenn Hutton: De Gea's nickname should be Dracula... He avoids crosses at all costs!

Josh Hammond: If you listened very carefully, you could hear the sound of ever United fan watching the game smashing their own face against the nearest solid object after that start.

Nokeeroe: That’s what happens when you put out a weak side against any Premier League side. United are paying the price here for disrespecting Burnley.

  14. What does Jose do now?published at 15:56 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2017

There were boos as the half-time whistle blew then, followed by a rallying cry from the Stretford End.

It's not as if United have had no pressure, just than Burnley have been committed and having got themselves into this position, don't look like relinquishing it.

Unless Jose Mourinho can come up with a rescue plan, United are about to complete an utterly abject week, following on from defeat at Bristol City in the Carabao Cup and conceding that late goal at Leicester.

Last time Burnley won at Old Trafford was 1962. Harold Macmillan was Prime Minister. JFK was president.

Another corner for United. Their seventh of the first half.

Ashley Young fires it in and Nemanja Matic rises to get on the end of it... but he cannot direct his header goalwards.

  18. Postpublished at 43 mins

    Manchester United 0-2 Burnley

Here come the hosts again. Paul Pogba shrugs off Steven Defour, and looks to bend his shot into the top corner. Nick Pope is at full stretch, but he is not getting that - and he is relieved to see the ball fizz inches wide of his left-hand post.

Another United attack. More exceptional Burnley defending.

Juan Mata works the ball to Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the left of the area. He has space to let fly, but Kevin Long throws himself at the ball to deflect it away from the target.
