  1. YELLOW CARDpublished at 57 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Southampton

Southampton's Sofiane Boufal has chanced his luck too many times. He is into the book for a string of niggly fouls, the latest being a tug on Ashley Young's shorts.

  2. Postpublished at 57 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Southampton

Jose Mourinho does not like to do business in January, but might he be tempted to take a dip for a striker if Romelu Lukaku's injury proves a lengthy one?

Or is it time to give Marcus Rashford a run up top?

  3. Mourinho's pragmatic Unitedpublished at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

    Danny Mills
Former England defender on 5 Live

Manchester United don't play in the outrageously attacking way we've seen United play over the years - it's not Jose Mourinho's way. Because of that they look a lot more solid at the back and they're much more patient, but it also gives opposition sides the chance to open up and play against them.

    Man Utd 0-0 Southampton

The first set-piece is headed behind by Maya Yoshida.

The second is claimed under little pressure by Alex McCarthy.

Manchester United are missing the physicality and height of Romelu Lukaku - injured - and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - left out - in the box.

Jose Mourinho is simmering. He is clearly not happy with what he is seeing. Luke Shaw has the pleasure of playing in front of his manager for the rest of the half.

  6. United going through the motionspublished at 18:47 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

    Manchester United 0-0 Southampton

    Danny Mills
Former England defender on 5 Live

I just wonder if Jose Mourinho has conceded the title now - he knows he's not going to win it - even though he'd never admit it. It's like United are just going through the motions here, maybe they're more focused on other competitions now. There's no urgency, maybe even some of the players - subconsciously - aren't giving their all because they know they can't win the league.

  8. Postpublished at 53 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Southampton

This is Southampton's best spell of the match so far. Manchester United are pressed back and the atmosphere is seeping out of Old Trafford.

The hosts need someone to spark something.

Aleksander Pagels: United really need some bite in the attack. Hence we need Luis Suarez.

Richard Clayton: United looking tepid first half even at the best of times. This is our problem, we need good players to start stepping up, to take more risks and stop encouraging teams to play onto us!

I do not know how David De Gea has got this up and over the bar. It is a brilliant save. Shane Long has got across Nemanja Matic and got his shot off, and De Gea's there with an outstretched right boot to clip it over the bar.

  12. CLOSE!published at 51 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Southampton

    Oh my.

Southampton within a whisker of the opener.

A slick counter attack, James Ward-Prowse's low cross, Shane Long's stab goalwards and David De Gea's outstretched foot turns the ball over the bar. Just.

  13. Postpublished at 49 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Southampton

Sam McQueen's low cross is cut out by Victor Lindelof, but only at the expense of a Southampton corner.

Jose Mourinho is busy chewing fourth official Bobby Madley's ear about a throw-in that did not go his way. Toughest baby-sitting gig in the business that.

    Corner cleared.

  14. Postpublished at 47 ,mins

Jesse Lingard flings over a skidding cross. Marcus Rashford has not quite anticipated that though and is caught slightly on his heels.

Still, something to build a bit of noise in the stands.

  16. Bench optionspublished at 18:34 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

    HT: Man Utd 0-0 Southampton

Actually, United managed two shots on goal before the break with Nemanja Matic's dolly of a daisy-cutter easily gobbled up by Alex McCarthy.

But they have not shown enough penetration to break down a Saints side that have threatened on the counter and in the air from set-pieces.

Anthony Martial is the most obvious attacking option on the bench, with Ander Herrera also riding the pine.

Manchester United are playing very deep at the moment - looking to play on the counter-attack. But up until now, they've only had one shot on target, that effort from Juan Mata. They aren't carrying enough threat at the moment.

  19. Man United need to adapt game planpublished at 18:28 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

    Manchester United 0-0 Southampton

    Danny Mills
Former England defender on 5 Live

Manchester United's game plan was to get the ball out wide and whip balls into the box for Romelu Lukaku, so they need to adapt, and it's not just up to the manager - the players need to use their experience to adjust how they're going to attack Southampton.
