  • Carlos Carvalhal's first game as Swansea manager

  1. Postpublished at 29 mins

    Watford 1-0 Swansea

Chance for Richarlison to stretch his long, gangly legs...

Abdoulaye Doucoure does well to feed a pass into the Brazilian's path and his heavy touch draws in a sliding tackle from Tom Carroll.

Richarlison pinches it away from the former Tottenham midfielder and is brought down, but referee Martin Atkinson waves play on.

    Watford 1-0 Swansea

Heurelho Gomes hasn't had much to do, so decides to make things interesting with one too many touches in his own box and the goalkeeper nearly gets hunted down by Jordan Ayew.

Watford look in control, but haven't really had another chance since the goal.

    Watford 1-0 Swansea

    Better from Swansea.

The Welsh outfit enjoy a rare foray into Watford territory and eek out some space for Roque Mesa on the edge of the box.

He fancies his chances, but makes a right, ahem, Mesa, of it....

    Here all week.

  4. Postpublished at 22 mins

    Watford 1-0 Swansea

Richarlison picks the ball up on the left, cuts inside and somehow manages to shrug off about three defenders to get his pass away and keep Watford on the attack.

The Hornets turn back towards their own goal and keep possession, before springing another attack down the right.

Stefano Okaka is beaten to a deep cross by a Swansea head and the visitors clear.

One of the reasons why Swansea City appointed Carlos Carvalhal was because of the Portuguese's propensity for attractive, possession-based football.

There were some signs of that early in this match but there is little Carvalhal can do about the brittle confidence of his players.

Swansea's passive defending for Watford's goal was typical of the Welsh side's meek displays in recent weeks, further underlining the enormity of the challenge facing Carvalhal.

    Watford 1-0 Swansea

Watford look comfortable in possession. There's always a yellow shirt on offer to take a pass.

They work it forward in a move containing more than 20 passes before Richarlison's little dink round the corner goes astray on the edge of the penalty area.

Tom Carroll is a tidy player.

He shows off some neat footwork and good vision to help his side play out from the back again.

Swansea are sitting deep and looking to spring Tammy Abraham and Jordan Ayew on the break.

    Watford 1-0 Swansea

Richarlison looks dangerous every time he gets on the ball, and Watford are looking to work it wide left for him on every possible occasion.

Kyle Naughton and Sam Clucas have their work cut out on Swansea's right.

  9. Richarlison the unconventional Brazilianpublished at 15:14 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

I'm a really big fan of Richarlison, he's quite unconventional for a Brazilian the way he likes to get in behind, but he's done brilliantly there.

He's still a bit raw around the edges, we see that with the energy he shows, so one thing he can do to improve his game is add goals.

Well, that spell of pressure from Watford began when Renato Sanches gave the ball away cheaply in midfield.

Not the start Swansea were looking for.

    Andre Carrillo (11 mins)

Richarlison twice goes close and on the second occasion Watford profit!

The Brazilian fired a warning with a low shot that drifted just wide moments earlier, before getting in again down the left and firing straight at Lukasz Fabianski.

The goalkeeper can only parry into the path of Andre Carrillo, though, and he heads in from close range.

    Watford 0-0 Swansea

    Decent start to this one.

Watford work it up the other end after Jordan Ayew's effort comes back off the bar, and Tom Cleverley finds space in the box to attempt a curling effort that drops narrowly wide.

  13. CLOSE!published at 5 mins

    Watford 0-0 Swansea

Lovely football from Swansea as Renato Sanches and Tom Carroll combine to play their way out of defence.

The Portuguese does well to pick out his team-mate rather than the advertising hoardings...

Jordan Ayew then breaks into the Watford half, looks up, can't see any other option but to shoot from 30+ yards and rattles an effort against the crossbar.

    Very nearly an absolute scorcher.

  14. YELLOW CARDpublished at 3 mins

    Watford 0-0 Swansea

Hang about. Richarlison is involved again down the left and skips away from Federico Fernandez, who slices him down and gets a booking.

Tom Cleverley's delivery is over hit.

    Watford 0-0 Swansea

Strong coat and scarf combo from Carlos Carvalhal for his first outing as Swansea boss - making the most of those Christmas additions to his wardrobe, perhaps.

Richarlison tries to wrap Sam Clucas up in knots with some early trickery, but can't get away from his man.

'Carvalhal knows how to set a team up'published at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

    Matthew Upson

I think Swansea appreciated Carlos Carvalhal's playing style at Sheffield Wednesday - he knows how to set up a team to play good, attacking football. But it's always a case of who's available when you need someone, too.

It didn't end very well for him at Wednesday, but the previous two years he took them to the play-offs and they were unlucky not to get something from them.

Watford ended a run of four successive defeats when they came from a goal down to beat Leicester and I think Hornets boss Marco Silva will have another victory to celebrate here now they have got that bad spell out of their system.

    Prediction: 2-0
