    Sheff Wed 0-0 Nott'm Forest

Forest really wobbling as Wednesday pour forward.

Steven Fletcher was drawn wide by his first touch and recycled the ball to the right for Ross Wallace. His back heel put Jack Hunt away again but his cross was nodded wide by Kieran Lee.

Then a searing Adam Reach run and pass found Gary Hooper who stepped inside his marker and drilled over. They look like a goal is coming...

Wednesday really dictating the pace of this game from the off. The crowd is with them and - from experience - that is key.

    Forest working hard defensively.

Another smart move by Sheffield Wednesday is eventually foiled by Forest, who are sitting pretty deep at the moment and looking to play on the break.

Ross Wallace then dinks a ball to the back post where Steve Fletcher's volley is turned behind by Jordan Smith. The corner is then punched behind by Smith. Early pressure from the Owls...

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Nott'm Forest

Sheffield Wednesday get the first chance of the game after just a couple of minutes.

A nice ball found the on-rushing Jack Hunt right side of the box and his swinging cross was stubbed wide by Gary Hooper.

    Decent chance but Forest survive.

Anyone who's been to a match involving a Yorkshire club against one from Nottingham - County, Forest or Mansfield - will have heard the cry of 'scabs' toward the midlanders from the terraces.

It's all down to one thing, the national miners' strike of 1984-85.

Miners from Scotland, through the remaining pits of the Durham coalfield, across Yorkshire and in south Wales and in Kent mobilised to strike - as pit closures were being accelerated by the National Coal Board. It was an industrial action that lasted almost an entire year.

However, a large proportion of Nottinghamshire miners did not join the strike, stating the lack of an official ballot. Some even formed their own rival union - the Union of Democratic Mineworkers - on the back of the dispute.

That bitterness manifested itself within those affected communities, even after the strike had ended in March 1985.

The intensity still burned in towns such as Barnsley and Rotherham, and even big cities like Leeds and Sheffield. It will be audible today.

There aren't many occasions where Forest get applauded at Hillsborough, but the quality of this performance was too good even for the partisan Owls support.

Wednesday only trailed 2-0 at half-time, but a rampant Reds side cut them to ribbons in the second half, leaving Stan Collymore and Bryan Roy with a double apiece to add to goals from Stuart Pearce, Ian Woan and Lars Bohinen while Mark Bright's penalty was the sole response.

It was hard to watch for Wednesday boss Trevor Francis, who of course had won a European Cup for Forest as a player.

For a little while it was the record away win in the Premier League. That was until Manchester United stuffed eight past Forest in an 8-1 success to cruelly snatch the record away in 1998-99.

That Forest side, who had already beaten Wednesday 4-1 in the home game, went on to finish third in the Premier League. The Owls by the way, finished 13th.

Howard Wilkinson had guided Sheffield Wednesday back to the First Division in 1983-84, and their opening match back in the top flight for 14 years saw Brian Clough's Forest visiting Hillsborough.

Forest had made it to the Uefa Cup semi-finals the previous season, but found Wilko's well-drilled Owls too hot to handle.

Steve Sutton brought down Brian Marwood, and Mel Sterland tucked away from the spot despite being made to retake but Peter Davenport levelled after Trevor Christie's sweet turn and through-ball.

Imre Varadi's sublime solo goal, on the back of Peter Shirtliff's clearance from a Forest corner, put the Owls ahead again, and sub John Pearson finished it all off with a late third.

Wednesday finished eighth that year, Forest tucked in behind in ninth.

2017 marks 40 years since a Brian Clough-inspired Forest side won promotion to the First Division by the skin of their teeth, and went on to dominate domestic and European competition over three glorious seasons.

There's little chance of strafing those heights but under manager Mark Warburton, and the off-field stability brought about by the backroom team appointed by new owner Evangelos Marinakis, they could emulate the promotion part.

Some impressive wins against Middlesbrough and Brentford have propelled the Reds to seventh. However, an note of caution comes as Yorkshire clubs have been their Achilles heel so far, with defeats by Leeds and Barnsley.

Despite going so close to Championship play-off glory over the past two seasons, there is a little sense that the Hillsborough natives are restless.

Mixed results haven't helped. Victory against Fulham showed their obvious qualities, and there were positives in draws with QPR and Sunderland.

Contrast that with defeat by struggling Bolton and a draw with Burton... That's why they're currently 17th after today's games, but they are capable of much more than that.

Sheff Wed: Westwood, Hunt, van Aken, Lees, Reach, Wallace, Jones, Lee, Bannan, Fletcher, Hooper

For readers of a certain vintage, Sheffield Wednesday versus Nottingham Forest has a bit of gravitas, a bit of 'je ne sais quoi' as they say.

Others a little younger might wonder what all the fuss is about.

Rewind 25 years and these two were right in the mix. Wembley a regular fixture in the calendar, England internationals in the squad. High-quality foreign imports no less.

Sadly, for fans of both clubs over the last decade it's been more like two old heavyweights trying to recreate past glories. Two bald men fighting over a comb. They've been to hell and back (and League One).

Things are starting to stir again though perhaps, with Wednesday's consecutive play-off appearances under Carlos Carvalhal, and Forest's new owner optimism this term.

    • Good days for Shrewsbury, Bradford and Charlton at the top of League One. Shrewsbury's 1-0 win against Wigan puts them at the summit. They were particularly grateful to Bradford City who unseated Peterborough with a 3-0 win. South London smiles will be wide at Charlton after their 2-1 win against Southend.
    • Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's Northampton got their first win of the season against Doncaster, while Oldham's hopes of a first win of the season were quashed by an injury-time equaliser by Fleetwood. They, Rochdale and Gillingham remain winless this term.
    • Crewe Alexandra returned to winning ways in emphatic manner with a 5-1 success against struggling Chesterfield, while there were also wins for Exeter, Accrington and Notts County in that top four.
    • Port Vale are bottom of the EFL, their fifth league defeat in a row leaves Michael Brown's side propping up the division, having come down from League One this term.
