    Ecuador 1-2 Argentina

Maverick stuff from Ecuador boss Jorge Celico as he makes a very early change. Enner Valencia is on for Ecuador before half-time. He's going for it!

Gordon Strachan's genetics chat has gone down like a deep-fried haggis hasn't it? Lionel Messi would probably get a game for Scotland. He could probably beat Scotland I v XI.

Anyway, almost half time in Quito. It's been a treat.

Amrul Choudhury: Falcao, Rodriguez, Alexis Sanchez, Vidal, Neymar, Messi, Suarez, Cavani, Di Maria we need these guys at WC. Please hold on.

Matthew Turner: small players ie Messi are proving that Gordon Strachan's genetics theory is nonsense.

Colin Zeal: Am following in auckland hoping for argentina to finish 5th - think a draw will do #comeonequador, external

  6. GREAT SAVE!published at 01:04 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    Ecuador 1-2 Argentina

Lionel Messi has been sensational but I tell you what, Angel di Maria hasn't been far behind. Whatever happened to him in England? A shell of a man in Manchester.

Anyway, he plays another one-two with Messi, they slice Ecuador to bits and he's in one on one, but the keeper this time makes a great save!

I don't know how many records Lionel Messi needs to break, but he's now the leading scorer in South American qualifying (all time) with 20.

GOAL - Uruguay 0-1 Boliviapublished at 24 mins

    Gaston Silva own goal

Uruguay started the day second in the table, but they have just gone behind at home against Bolivia, with Gaston Silva diverting the ball into his own net.

He is unlucky to do so as the hosts fail to deal with a long throw and Uruguay captain Diego Godin's attempted clearance bounces off the unfortunate Silva and into the net.

    Ecuador 1-2 Argentina

Ecuador looking a little rattled, they have nothing to play for as it stands but national pride. And they have that in spades. They look a threat from set-pieces but Argentina just about clear their lines.

Aidan Mifsud‏: Messi in the mood. Finally looking like he might do a Maradona and win a match for Argentina single-handedly.

Matthew M Milton: In Queenstown following updates, hoping for any results where Argentina don't finish fifth Don't want to face them in the playoffs.

That Messi goal means things are looking good for Argentina, who jump up to third. Colombia would drop down to the play-off versus New Zealand as it stands.

    The top four go through.

Fair play to Argentina, and to Lionel Messi. They have rallied superbly to conceding after 38 seconds. I guess the only way was up.

    Lionel Messi (20 mins)

    WOOOSH!

It can't be easy having the weight of 43,000,000 people on your shoulders, especially when you're only 5ft 7ins tall.

But when you're an absolute genius it doesn't really matter. Lionel Messi pounces on a poor touch in the Ecuadorian backline, breaks into the area but has lots to do. He does it.

He smashes a left-footed shot right into the top corner. It's a brilliant, brilliant finish.

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 17 mins

    Brazil 0-0 Chile

So close to an opening goal in Brazil. And the chance falls to Neymar who only has the goalkeeper to beat. But luckily for Chile, Manchester City's Claudio Bravo does well to save the low shot and deflect it away for a corner, which comes to nothing.

    Ecuador 1-1 Argentina

If you're staying up through the night with us your decision has already been justified. This is a cracking game. Argentina just cannot defend at all! They could well concede again. But Angel di Maria has started superbly, and he has another shot turned away.

    Who else?!

It's a textbook Lionel Messi goal too. Driving from deep, feeding in Angel di Maria on the overlap, he cuts it back neatly and the Barcelona genius toe-pokes home under the keeper.

    Game on!
