It's a real shame Netherlands won't be at the World Cup. A country that has given so much to the competition.

And after all that, all the permutations and head-scratching, it's Slovakia who will finish second in their group but miss out on a place in the play-offs.

    The eight are:

Greece, Sweden, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Denmark, Croatia, Switzerland

    Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

Arjen Robben is replaced as we tick into the last minute, to a hero's reception. He scored twice tonight, could hardly have done any more.

Is that the end of a wonderful international career?

    Portugal 2-0 Switzerland

You shouldn't judge a team on a 90-minute viewing but considering their record coming into the game you can't help but be disappointed in Switzerland. I'm not sure Martin or Michael O'Neill will have seen too much to scare them on this viewing...

    Netherlands 2-0 Sweden

I don't think there was ever much hope that the Dutch could get seven, but it's been a very flat and disappointing second half. Sub Bas Dost heads over an Arjen Robben cross.

    Belgium 4-0 Cyprus

How deep will Belgium go? Romelu Lukaku has just made it 4-0. I'm sure Manchester United fans would rather he wasn't playing at all tonight - though he only came on after 66 minutes...

Has to score! Cristiano Ronaldo is in on goal, beyond the offside trap, one-on-one with the goalkeeper. It's a film you've seen so many times before. You know all the words.

Except, he doesn't score! Credit to Yann Sommer who comes out sharply and then stays on his toes for as long as possible. Ronaldo tries to go around him but the Monchengladbach man prevails.

We will have no Dutch team in the World Cup then. I was going to say that we will have no Oranje army but I'm sure a load of them will travel anyway. They have dominated tonight but the horse had long since bolted.

    Portugal 2-0 Switzerland

The cameras pick out a very frustrated Swiss fan in the stands and you can understand why. A team with a 100% record coming in to the game, only needing a point to qualify, and they have barely had a shot of note. They've been very stodgy.

    France 2-1 Belarus

How far do you think France could go next summer? They have some squad - bear in mind that Ngolo Kante and Paul Pogba are both injured tonight.

Sub Kylian Mbappe isn't bad either, and he hits a shot straight at Sergei Chemik.

Group H winners Belgium are now 3-0 up against Cyprus. Eden Hazard got he first, his brother Thorgan has added the second and Eden added the third with a penalty.

In the same group, Greece will finish the group in second place and are leading 3-0 against Gibraltar.

Greece would have missed out on the play-offs if they suffered a shock defeat and Bosnia-Herzegovina won. Bosnia are 1-0 up in Estonia, but a goal from Vasilis Torosidis and two from ex-Fulham man Kostas Mitroglou have Greece heading into a two-legged play-off tie.
