Greece defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos has gone on record saying Croatia are "95% qualified" with a 4-1 aggregate lead.

Team news next will show you his country have overhauled their charitable defence.

It was the worst competitive defeat Greece have tasted for a decade.

If you missed the first leg, let me fill you in on the defending Greece centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulous later described as "ridiculous".

It started when Greece keeper Orestis Karnezis took a heavy first touch in his area to lose the ball, prompting him to concede a penalty.

Greece then allowed two close-range finishes from unmarked players - the men crossing the ball also had acres - and the fourth goal arrived when a defender tried to chest the ball back to his keeper.

As D:Ream once sang, 'things can only get better'.

That's the term the Greek press used to describe the first leg, an 'unprecedented disgrace'.

Even by press standards that sounds hurtful. Not only are you a disgrace but such disgrace has never before been seen.

I covered the first leg of this tie and to be fair, Greece did defend with all the poise of a toddler on roller skates. There were plenty of head in hands moments.

But if the headlines were so bad, picture how good they will be if we get a momentous comeback here.

Thanks Phil. Commiserations if you're of a Northern Ireland persuasion. Congratulations if you have Swiss interest.

Now it's time for all our Greek and Croatian friends to embrace the nerves.

Will we see the comeback of comebacks?

  7. 'I don't think it's a reasonable question'published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

Switzerland 0-0 Northern Ireland (agg 1-0)

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill has urged his older players not to rush into a decision on their international futures.

"I said to the players in the dressing room that ultimately they’ve got a decision to make on their futures but don’t rush into a decision," he told Sky Sports. "We don’t play Euro qualifiers until March. Look at Aaron Hughes, who retired five years ago and yet he’s playing tonight and was close to a World Cup."

He was annoyed to be asked if he would be in charge for the opening Euro 2020 qualifier.

"I haven’t given it any thought. I don’t think it’s a reasonable question. My thoughts are with my players at the moment."

We got a performance tonight that we really needed. We gave it everything we can and unfortunately it just wasn't to be. A great occasion and a pleasure to be here watching it.

  9. 'We should still be playing extra time now'published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill to Sky Sports: "Ultimately we’ve gone out to a poor decision in the first leg. Our performance and reaction tonight was fabulous. We were the better team. We had to ride our luck at times but we were pushing until the 94th minute. The players are devastated but I couldn’t be any prouder.

"The first leg is difficult as it’s tactical and cagey but tonight you’re fighting for your dream and your life and the emotional side overrides tactics. Tonight we played with raw courage. We’ll have some regrets. If it wasn’t for the penalty we’d still be playing extra time now. They players will be remembered for the performance tonight.

"It’s a very sore way to lose. We deserve to still be playing in extra time. We have to move on.

"We brought on young Jordan Jones, who is at Kilmarnock, and they’re bringing on a £20m player. To take a team like Switzerland to the final minute over two legs is an amazing achievement. We don’t always have top level players but we have top level characters."

JMac: Well played Northern Ireland you done us all at home proud. Congrats to Switzerland good luck in Russia they’re a good side, but our boys were gallant in defeat.

Jason Cole: If football results were judged on the passion and decency of their team and fans, Northern Ireland would win the World Cup.

Jay Scott: Wouldn't feel as bad about the result if we got beat a deserved 6-0 but to lose the tie by a refereeing decision is heartbreaking.

Could this be the last time we see Michael O’Neill in a Northern Ireland press conference?

Credit to him for making the changes and transforming his side from the one that played so poorly on Thursday night. But ultimately it wasn’t to be, they’ve paid the price for a very poor refereeing decision and a below par performance at Windsor Park.

It’s been a remarkable six years from Michael O’Neill, it will be fascinating to hear his thoughts here in Basel for possibly the last time.

The thing is, they could not have done anymore in terms of effort, application. Straight away Northern Ireland went for Switzerland. The Swiss had more chances and could and should have scored. But Northern Ireland were still in the game so late on and the performance was fantastic.

While incompetence is the story of that goal. For just a few minutes let's not let it overshadow the players, manager and fans.

The quote I always come back to with Northern Ireland is 'If you cant support us when we lose, do not support us when we win.'

The players are holding back tears. Look at the support. That's what supporting a small country is all about and I am brimming with pride.
