We can look back at the first leg. Tonight every man has put a shift in. A lot of Swiss fans turned up thinking it would be a walk in the park. We tested them and every player should be proud of themselves.

    Heartbreak.

The whistle blows, the Swiss players embrace, the Northern Ireland players sink to the sodden turf.

They gave it everything they could, but it was not quite enough.

A very relieved Switzerland go to the World Cup. Northern Ireland are out but leave with pride.

Chris Brunt's initial corner is cleared but the ball is returned and swung in. It beats the keeper and Jonny Evans rises and plants a header that looks set for the goal until Ricardo Rodriguez gets back to hack it away from inches out.

There was the chance. Will they get another?

The home fans' first reaction to the sight of Haris Seferovic's number going up is to boo. Being polite, it has not been his night.

There is a small amount of polite applause after the boos subside, but you can see that Seferovic is rattled. Breel Embolo is his replacement.

I don't know how he has missed that and how many chances he wants. The Swiss fans sound like they want him off now. The game could be dead and buried if he'd put chances away tonight.

Oh my word. Haris Seferovic has had an awful night, truly awful. And this is his lowest point.

Northern Ireland are opened up and it is four against two, but after the ball is fed to the Swiss striker in the box he scoops his shot way over the bar.

The screams of anguish from the stands tells you all.

If Northern Ireland get their goal, Seferovic could be in for a tough few days.

We have to take a risk or two now. Norwood has done a great job in blocking things but now we have to go for things so the defensive midfielder is off.
