1. Saints boss Wright stays positivepublished at 12:16

    St Johnstone v Celtic (12:30)

Tommy Wright tells BBC Radio Scotland that his resources are stretched because of injuries, but the St Johnstone manager is remaining upbeat.

"There's a lot made of the record, but we are concentrating on being prepared for what is going to be a very difficult game," he says.

"They have better players in every position, but we have got to take confidence from our display at Celtic park and try to replicate that.

"There has been a lot said of our form in the media, but there is no doom and gloom, but I have told them that they are good players and proved that over five or six seasons.

"I've got to be happy with the team I have managed to put out."

Willie Maley's side went 62 league games unbeaten - pre-League Cup and during a Scottish Cup wartime hiatus - between 1915 and 1917, but Brendan Rodgers and his side could supplant them in the history books today at St Johnstone.

The seed for this record toppling was planted by Rodgers' predecessor, Ronny Deila. The Norwegian's final match in charge of Celtic was a 7-0 thrashing of Motherwell in May 2016; this became game one of the unbeaten run.

Just days before, St Johnstone's Graham Cummins capitalised on an error between Efe Ambrose and Logan Bailly to seal a Saints victory over the already-crowned champions, at McDiarmid Park.

Celtic are already in the company of some of European football's most illustrious teams. The legendary AC Milan sides of Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello went 58 unbeaten in the early 1990s; the Olympiacos team of the 1970s managed similar and the dominant Benfica side of the 1970s two fewer than that.

Game 62 - a draw with Kilmarnock at Celtic Park - saw the Scottish champions overtake Arsenal's invincible side of 2003/2004 in league matches, before Arsene Wenger's 49-game unbeaten record was ended at Manchester United.

If Celtic win, they would move joint-third in Uefa's all-time domestic unbeaten record chart, alongside Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol. That would just leave Lincoln Red Imps (88), who defeated Celtic in Rodgers' first competitive game in charge, and the great Steaua Bucharest side of the late 1980s (104) ahead of the Scottish champions.

Tommy Wright says his St Johnstone players can end Celtic's unbeaten run - because they have overturned the odds in games before.

The Perth side were the last team to defeat Celtic in a domestic fixture, 62 games ago, but have failed to score since September.

"We still go into the game thinking we can win," Wright said.

"We have always been capable of throwing up surprise results and Saturday is no different."

St Johnstone have lost four of their last five matches, with their last goal coming in the 2-1 win over Hamilton in September.

"The key to anything you do against them is what happens when you get the ball," Wright added.

"You have to be prepared to take the ball and be prepared to play against them.

"If you defend well but keep giving the ball back to them, eventually they will wear you down and very quickly, if they get that first goal, they can score two or three in a short space of time."

  12. Celtic not focused on record - Daviespublished at 11:51

    St Johnstone v Celtic (12:30)

Celtic assistant manager Chris Davies says the players are ignoring the prospect of setting a new unbeaten domestic record against St Johnstone.

By avoiding defeat, the champions would overtake the 62-game mark set by Willie Maley's Celtic in 1917.

Davies says that the fact the record has stood for a century is a measure of the achievement's worth.

"We've never used it as a team talk. The record is not something we sit and worry about," Davies said.

"When you're doing it you don't think about it. It's just been a consequence of the great work for the players and the manager leading everyone forward."
