Although Middlesbrough edge the overall head-to-head between these two teams, it's the Robins who've had the better of this contest in recent years.

Bristol City have won each of their past four meetings, the last of those a 1-0 win in January 2016 - the first game following Steve Cotterill's departure as manager.

Bristol City have arguably been the polar opposite of Middlesbrough, right in the thick of a top-six challenge having endured a club record run of defeats on their way to finishing 17th last season.

As it happens, no Championship side has lost fewer games than City since 1 March. The Robins had lost 15 of their 19 matches before that.

All plain sailing then? Not completely so in recent weeks, according to centre-half Aden Flint.

"The results we've picked up have been good," Flint told BBC Radio Bristol. "But the performances haven't been so good. We're working to put that right."

It's not been the smoothest of starts for pre-season promotion favourites Middlesbrough, who've only twice strung together back-to-back wins and find themselves in ninth after Ipswich won this afternoon.

It's games like this one this evening, therefore, that they probably need to be winning - an opportunity to pull themselves to within two points of Bristol City and stay in touch with the chasing pack.

"We've made far too many avoidable mistakes and we've not been clinical or ruthless enough with the chances we've created," Boro boss Garry Monk told BBC Tees during the week.

"Those are the two areas that are holding us back."
