Well, what a day that was.

Boxing Day provided some fantastic football for us, but it's time for me to leave you in peace to enjoy the rest of the evening in sporting peace.

To all of you who've stuck with me right up to the end, thank you so much for reading, and thanks too to my colleague Steve Marshall for his help keeping this page ticking over smoothly.

    Until the next time, goodnight.

    FT: Brentford 2-1 Aston Villa

These are heady days for Brentford.

Tonight's victory was only their second win over Aston Villa in their history, but, more than that, they are now 11 league games unbeaten at Griffin Park.

That's Brentford's best run at home in the top two divisions since 1951.

Brentford boss Dean Smith told Sky Sports:

"I felt we were good value for the win. I thought we started the game really well, passed the ball quite well and pressed them very well.

"I don't think we created loads of chances but when they did come around we took them well. It's a great victory for us.

"We held firm at the end and it shows the heart and character that the players have got."

    FT: Brentford 2-1 Aston Villa

Goalscorer Lasse Vibe told Sky Sports:

"This is a time of the season when it's in the balance. With a few more wins I think we can get in and amongst the play-offs. That's what we've been aiming for all season.

"We don't just want to stay in this division, we want to compete."

    Gary Thompson
Ex-Aston Villa forward on BBC WM

"It seems as if Villa have lost their way a bit and at the moment they look a long way from a play-off side.

"Christmas is not going to break their season but if they are not careful they could find themselves a long way off the pace."

  7. FULL-TIME - Brentford 2-1 Aston Villapublished at 21:26 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2017

Brentford hang on to provide a big boost to their play-off hopes.

Aston Villa are now without a win in five Championship games.

Brentford still looking for the killer blow here, Nico Yennaris heading narrowly off-target from Sergi Canos' corner.

Aston Villa have 60 seconds left to find an equaliser.

    Somehow, Brentford retain the lead.

Keinan Davis is played through on goal, but Dan Bentley makes an incredible save to his right to get the ball behind.

The resulting corner looks to have been scrambled over the line, yet once again Bentley is on hand to smother the ball at the last moment.

Florian Jozefzoon is still full of energy even at this late stage, bursting into the Villa box from the right before eventually being crowded out close to the six-yard box.

Brentford are down to 10 men at the moment as Chris Mepham is off the pitch with blood gushing from his nose.

Keinan Davis is almost able to take advantage, but Nico Yennaris gets back to make a crucial block.

There will be six minutes of added time.

After a change of shirt, Andreas Bjelland will carry on despite suffering that head injury.

It's always a little concerning to see a player continue after an incident like that, as much as you respect their commitment to their team.

There are less than three minutes of the 90 to play, though there will certainly be plenty of time added on.

    Brentford 2-1 Aston Villa

Brentford defender Andreas Bjelland has been down for a couple of minutes after a clash of heads with Keinan Davis.

The thick bandage is going on, but you'd be surprised if he can carry on after that.

Villa make a substitution while play is stopped, Ahmed Elmohamady replacing Tommy Elphick.

Brentford boss Dean Smith makes a change as he tries to keep the three points secure, adding some fresh legs up front.

Neal Maupay is on for the final 10 minutes or so, Lasse Vibe heading to the bench.

Fulham produced one of the performances of the day to beat second-placed Cardiff 4-2 and move up to 11th in the Championship table, six points outside the play-off places.

"I expect we are going to be clever in the January transfer window, we are going to try to find some additions to our squad," manager Slavisa Jokanovic told BBC Radio London.

"These players that I used today and who I am working with showed a great level of quality and spirit.

"We created some expectations after last season, this season we didn’t start good enough, and it is normal if you don’t start well that depression can start around us and the team.

"We have showed that we are still alive, it is clear we need to improve to be competitive."

Aston Villa are finishing strongly, though without a goal to show for it.

Neil Taylor digs a cross in from the left, but it's just too high once again for Keinan Davis to be able to direct a header on goal.

Just a little sniff of goal for Aston Villa, Alan Hutton's cross inches over the leap of striker Keinan Davis.

Hutton is getting forward increasingly frequently from right-back for the visitors, who are starting to look more vulnerable to the counter-attack as a result.

Lasse Vibe shoots at the Villa goal attempting to put the game beyond doubt, but his effort is straight at Sam Johnstone.

  17. Reaction: "That was a Millwall performance"published at 21:05 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2017

Millwall extended their unbeaten home league run to four games as they held Championship leaders Wolves to a 2-2 draw at the Den in the day's early kick-off.

"There was no sitting back, no negativity on the pitch or off the pitch," manager Neil Harris said.

"We gave it a right go and I thought our second goal was well earned.

"I'm really pleased with a point - no-one was short-changed today in the crowd, that's for sure.

"I thought it was an excellent game of football, end to end, and in some ways David Livermore - my assistant - summed it up in saying 'that's a Millwall performance'."

    Brentford 2-1 Aston Villa

Brentford have made a change of their own, Kamo Mokotjo coming on in place of Josh McEachran.

Keinan Davis has yet to make the impact Steve Bruce was looking for for Aston Villa, who are still on the back foot as the game enters its closing stages.

    Brentford 2-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa roll the dice, bringing on young striker Keinan Davis for Glenn Whelan as they switch to a classic 4-4-2 formation.

It's Brentford who continue to press though, but they miss out on a free-kick on the edge of the area when the referee plays advantage following a foul on Lasse Vibe.

Tommy Elphick goes into the book for the challenge, but the attack fizzles out. I think the Bees would have preferred the free-kick.

Aston Villa winger Robert Snodgrass tries to test Dan Bentley with a free-kick from 25 yards out, but for the second time tonight he drills a shot straight into the wall.

Snodgrass doesn't look a happy chap out there at the moment.
