These are heady days for Brentford.

Tonight's victory was only their second win over Aston Villa in their history, but, more than that, they are now 11 league games unbeaten at Griffin Park.

That's Brentford's best run at home in the top two divisions since 1951.

Brentford boss Dean Smith told Sky Sports:

"I felt we were good value for the win. I thought we started the game really well, passed the ball quite well and pressed them very well.

"I don't think we created loads of chances but when they did come around we took them well. It's a great victory for us.

"We held firm at the end and it shows the heart and character that the players have got."

Goalscorer Lasse Vibe told Sky Sports:

"This is a time of the season when it's in the balance. With a few more wins I think we can get in and amongst the play-offs. That's what we've been aiming for all season.

"We don't just want to stay in this division, we want to compete."

That result leaves Aston Villa three points outside the play-off places.

Brentford, after a pretty disastrous start to the season, are only four points further back.

"It seems as if Villa have lost their way a bit and at the moment they look a long way from a play-off side.

"Christmas is not going to break their season but if they are not careful they could find themselves a long way off the pace."

Brentford hang on to provide a big boost to their play-off hopes.

Florian Jozefzoon is still full of energy even at this late stage, bursting into the Villa box from the right before eventually being crowded out close to the six-yard box.

Brentford are down to 10 men at the moment as Chris Mepham is off the pitch with blood gushing from his nose.

Keinan Davis is almost able to take advantage, but Nico Yennaris gets back to make a crucial block.

There will be six minutes of added time.

After a change of shirt, Andreas Bjelland will carry on despite suffering that head injury.

It's always a little concerning to see a player continue after an incident like that, as much as you respect their commitment to their team.

There are less than three minutes of the 90 to play, though there will certainly be plenty of time added on.

The thick bandage is going on, but you'd be surprised if he can carry on after that.

Fulham produced one of the performances of the day to beat second-placed Cardiff 4-2 and move up to 11th in the Championship table, six points outside the play-off places.

"I expect we are going to be clever in the January transfer window, we are going to try to find some additions to our squad," manager Slavisa Jokanovic told BBC Radio London.

"These players that I used today and who I am working with showed a great level of quality and spirit.

"We created some expectations after last season,this season we didn’t start good enough, and it is normal if you don’t start well that depression can start around us and the team.

"We have showed that we are still alive, it is clear we need to improve to be competitive."

Aston Villa are finishing strongly, though without a goal to show for it.

Millwall extended their unbeaten home league run to four games as they held Championship leaders Wolves to a 2-2 draw at the Den in the day's early kick-off.

"There was no sitting back, no negativity on the pitch or off the pitch," manager Neil Harris said.

"We gave it a right go and I thought our second goal was well earned.

"I'm really pleased with a point - no-one was short-changed today in the crowd, that's for sure.

"I thought it was an excellent game of football, end to end, and in some ways David Livermore - my assistant - summed it up in saying 'that's a Millwall performance'."

Brentford have made a change of their own, Kamo Mokotjo coming on in place of Josh McEachran.

Keinan Davis has yet to make the impact Steve Bruce was looking for for Aston Villa, who are still on the back foot as the game enters its closing stages.
