    Brentford 2-1 Aston Villa

That's as close as Aston Villa have come this half.

Jack Grealish works himself half a yard of space down the left and whips in a cross which drifts narrowly wide at the far post.

His team-mates let him down a bit there - nobody made a convincing run to get on the end of that delivery.

It's been a miserable night for Steve Bruce so far, his most dangerous player taken off injured inside 20 minutes, trailing 2-1 and dealing with miserable conditions in London.

His side would have been in the top six tonight if they could have won by two or more goals, but at the moment you feel the Villa boss would be pretty happy if Villa can take a point from Griffin Park.

"Villa are under pressure now and they don't have an out ball. They need to talk to each other. They cannot allow Brentford to keep having time on the ball and free efforts on goal."

Sergi Canos has been the best player on the pitch tonight.

The young Brentford winger cuts in from the left and curls a shot onto the crossbar via a deflection from a Villa defender.

Canos has had the beating of right-back Alan Hutton all night long.

Leeds came from behind to beat Burton 2-1 and strengthen their position in the Championship's top six. It was the first time Leeds had won from a losing position in over a year.

"It's a good sign, we are strong mentally when we go behind," head coach Thomas Christiansen told BBC Radio Leeds.

"There are no bad teams or bad opponents, you have to turn a result away from home.

"They were 1-0 up, defended with five defenders and did everything to try to maintain that result. That's proof of the quality and the strength of my team."

    Brentford 2-1 Aston Villa

Florian Jozefzoon and Sergi Canos have been very lively on the wings for Brentford today.

Jozefzoon cuts inside and tries to slip a pass into the path of Lasse Vibe, but it's got just slightly too much on it and the ball runs out of play.

Villa are on the ropes here.

    Brentford are back in front!

Josh Onomah should clear Josh McEachran's corner, but he fails to do so and the ball falls kindly to Lasse Vibe.

From six yards out, Vibe turns and sweeps the ball low into the Villa goal.

Almost a Brentford goal within a minute of kick-off!

Sergi Canos dispossesses Glenn Whelan and shoots at the Villa goal.

His effort is blocked, but Canos is almost able to turn in the rebound from three yards out before Tommy Elphick is able to get back to turn the ball behind.

Brilliant defending from the Villa centre-half.

Bristol City took advantage of Cardiff's defeat by Fulham to climb to second in the Championship table with a 2-0 victory over Reading.

"I'm delighted today, delighted with the boys, it was always going to be tough," head coach Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol.

"I was worried that this one might be the one where everything caught up with them, but they were outstanding.

"I thought we were excellent in the second half, we could have scored three or four and definitely should have had a penalty."

Sheffield Wednesday enjoyed a winning start under caretaker boss Lee Bullen, who has been asked to take charge of the club until at least 1 January following the dismissal of Carlos Carvalhal. The Owls won 3-0 at Nottingham Forest today.

"I enjoyed it, I don't know about the first 20 minutes when Joe Wildsmith kept us in the game with two or three fabulous saves," Bullen told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"It's a dream opportunity [to take charge of the team], the size of the club that it is, once you've been at the club it's hard to get it out of your system.

"But I know the situation I'm in, the chairman's asked me to do it for one or two games and then more than likely athere will be a new coach coming in.

"All I can do is put pressure on with the results, but ultimately it'd be nice to stay and be part of a new regime."

Brentford started off quite brightly and took hold of the game.

But when Villa made them play the ball longer by putting the press on them then they've had more of the ball and got back into the game.

At the moment 1-1 is about fair.

  15. HALF-TIME - Brentford 1-1 Aston Villapublished at 20:19 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2017

Brentford are almost gifted a second goal on the stroke of half-time as Villa keeper Sam Johnstone flaps at a free-kick from the left, but his team-mates bail him out and get the ball clear.

It's level at half-time, probably a fair scoreline after an intriguing first 45 minutes.

Yoann Barbet is involved at the other end now, finding Sergi Canos inside the Aston Villa box, with the winger winning his side a corner.

Villa safely see off the set-piece, before Canos' shot from the edge of the box is charged down without ever threatening the goal.

Brentford full-back Yoann Barbet goes into the book for a foul on Alan Hutton.

There's no malice to the challenge, but it's as obvious a yellow card as you could ever wish to see.

Barbet doesn't seem to think so, optimistically protesting against the referee's decision.

The yellow card is as bad as it gets for the Bees though as they comfortably clear away the free-kick.
