Into the last 10 then, call it 15 with added time. Jonjo Shelvey snaps into a tackle and then breaks forward to play a neat pass through. The same can't be said of Kenedy, who panics and plays it out of play. Poor.

Amazing phase of play. Newcastle are defending for their lives at the moment. They’ve dropped deep but are still a threat on break.

This would be a massive three points for Newcastle United.

Steven: Chris Smalling makes Titus Bramble look good and that's saying something. An awful centre back, has to be moved on post-haste.

Anon: Lingard off. Pogba off. These two should be playing like Aguero and De Bruyne. Smalling's action is disgraceful! No Luke Shaw - why? I'm United through and through but I'm presently really embarrassed and disappointed.

West Brom, who play Chelsea tomorrow, are suddenly seven points adrift of safety as it stands.

The table has turned on them horribly in the last week or so.

Not sure how that stayed out! Manchester United have a corner which is headed down, Anthony Martial has two shots blocked on the line!

Both by Dwight Gayle in fact. Great play from the former Stansted man.

All credit to Newcastle. They dropped into the relegation zone after that Huddersfield win and have responded well. Maybe Southampton will now do the same?

Romelu Lukaku gets a good cross in but Paul Dummett is there back post to head away.

  8. Klopp rests Hendersonpublished at 15:48 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2018

    Southampton v Liverpool (16:30 GMT)

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirms he has rested captain Jordan Henderson for the game at Southampton, perhaps with one eye on the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie with Porto.

Klopp said: "He’s not injured but he gets a rest, I decided. He can do it today.

"It was hard to decide but it gives him the opportunity to make a real session instead of sitting on the bench today that’s the truth."

Emre Can takes over the skipper's armband in Henderson's absence.

Jon: I am sure Man Utd fans now understand why SAF sold Pogba the first time.

Anon: Games like this are why we'll never win the league under Mourinho. Can't score, can't defend and no plan B when things get tough.

Adam: Is that the first ever goal that’s come as a direct result of a centre-back diving on the halfway line?

Paul: Take a bow, Chris Smalling. An utterly ridiculous dive, followed by absolutely botching the coverage of the free-kick.

Lee: Shame we didnt make that substitution before Pogba just stood and watched the first header. Awful!

    Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

This is Michael Carrick's first taste of Premier League action all season by the way. Not the circumstances he probably imagined.

Manchester United need some inspiration from somewhere or it's a 16-point lead for Manchester City at the top.

Rob: Newcastle score first regularly and never get the second. Palace and Burnley both finished 1-1, we must score again.

David:The two best players in the Newcastle side today, Kennedy and Dubravka are the ones Rafa signed on loan. Imagine how much better we'd be if he was able to actually buy 5 or 6 new players

Great goal. Strangely the free kick from a dive by Chris Smalling in his own half. Good ball in from Jonjo Shelvey, nice touch from Ayoze Perez and a good finish by Matt Ritchie from 12 yards.

    Who's picking him up?!

Newcastle score from the free-kick awarded for Chris Smalling's dive. The ball is pumped into the area, flicked on and Dwight Gayle plays a lovely little backheel into the run of Matt Ritchie. Nobody is anywhere near the winger and he keeps cool to fire in low and hard.
