Theo Walcott tries to inject some excitement on the right and wins a corner.

The ball drops to Wayne Rooney in the area, but he's crowded like a half-price 42in TV on Black Friday.

    And loses possession.

After Jack Butland's mistake earlier for Stoke, Jordan Pickford could have a chance of starting for England at the World Cup.

He's one of the better signings that Everton have made. He will know he has to concentrate on every ball coming into the penalty area.

    Fair shout Ronny

  4. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Watford 0-0 Everton

Midfielder Tom Davies dives in late on Jose Holebas - ref Anthony Taylor has a word with the Toffee, but keeps his card in his pocket.

    Lucky?

Good interplay between Gylfi Sigurdsson and Tom Davies. That's the first shot on target.

The game is settling down now.

  6. A shot!!published at 15 mins

    Watford 0-0 Everton

Everton's man from Iceland, Gylfi Sigurdsson, makes some room for himself on the edge of the area, but the resulting low shot trickles into the hands of Greek keeper Orestis Karnezis.

That was a good break by Everton. Tom Davies has started the game really brightly.

  8. Postpublished at 14 mins

    Watford 0-0 Everton

Watford boss Javi Gracia is padded up to the max - he is sans woolly hat though. Brave.

  9. Postpublished at 12 mins

    Watford 0-0 Everton

Much better by Oumar Niasse on the far left.

He makes his way to the byeline and fires a low ball that takes a deflection off Adrian Mariappa en route to almost catching out keeper Orestis Karnezis.

    It doesn't.

  10. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Watford 0-0 Everton

Oumar Niasse appears to knock out Watford's Sebastian Prodl with the top of his arm - it was a bit like a scene from a knock-off version of Raging Bull.

Prodl is OK, by the way.

    Watford 0-0 Everton

Watford have corner after some Deulofeu trickery...

It's played low and into the path of the deep-lying Abdoulaye Doucoure, who is known for a good thump, but instead he strikes a wayward effort which is what the word 'wayward' was invented for.

    Watford 0-0 Everton

Oumar Niasse steams in at the far post, but he can't square the ball for his team-mates.

Is Deulofeu's barnet a tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton's former comb-over?

Anyway, Theo Walcott has won Everton a free-kick about 25 yards from goal on the right.

    To be clipped.

    Watford v Everton (17:30 GMT)

Both teams have just trotted out on to the pitch to the sounds of the Z Cars theme tune.

If you're wondering why Watford come out to that tune it's because the Hornets' former boss Bill McGarry wanted them to - they went on a long unbeaten run after it was introduced in the 60s and it's stuck since.

  16. 'Rooney's strengths may lie deeper'published at 17:27 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2018

    Watford v Everton (17:30 GMT)

    Paul Clement
Former Swansea manager on Football Focus

Clearly Rooney is a different player than before when he was 16, 17 and leading the line as a number 9. He is playing deeper now, whether that’s off striker or in midfield. That looks like where they see his strengths now, in a more influential deeper midfield role. Because when you get older you’re less dynamic and lose a bit of pace.

Toffees boss Sam Allardyce recently said that he can't accommodate both skipper Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson in the team because of their lack of pace - anyway, they're both in the starting XI.

Here's what ex Swansea boss Paul Clement had to say about Rooney's position....

  18. Half and half?published at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2018

    Watford v Everton (17:30 GMT)

As mentioned earlier, you could be a Watford fan who's a 'glass half-looking up the table' kind of person or the other one.

This is the kind which your chief Gracia is:

"I don't like to speak about relegation. I only focus on the next match - to speak about other things is not good for anybody.

"I don't know [how many points might be needed to stay up], but I know one thing - we need three points against Everton.

"This is the best way to play these 11 matches that are left. We try to get to 33 points first, to look so far ahead is not the best way to play our matches."

  19. 'Watford could narrow the gap'published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2018

    Watford v Everton (17:30 GMT)

    John Roder
    Match of the Day commentator

Everton are strong contenders for a second successive finish in seventh place as Sam Allardyce's side come into this match just two points behind Burnley, who currently occupy that position.

Javi Gracia, who replaced Everton target Marco Silva last month, recorded his first and only victory with the magnificent 4-1 win over Chelsea almost three weeks ago.

Such is the congested nature of the table that another home success would see Watford narrow the gap on Everton to a single point, while Everton will be looking to record only their second away win in the league this season to move closer to a return to European football.
