I did see a bit of chat linking Torres with a move to Newcastle before the deadline...
Biggest January moves
Before this year the biggest incoming transfer to the Premier League in January was Fernando Torres heading to Chelsea from Liverpool for £50m in 2011.
£50m was - still is - a huge fee. Shockingly so at the time. It remains the eighth biggest expenditure on a player by an English club.
It's probably fair to say that Torres' time in London didn't go to plan. He was superb for Liverpool for a few seasons but already looked on his way down when he moved.
He scored just 20 Premier League goals for Chelsea, fewer than Branislav Ivanovic, but did win the Champions League and Europa League with the Blues.

Danny Kirks: West Ham went into this window desperate for a striker. We’ve sold two forwards for the best part of £30m and replaced them with a guy who was playing for Port Vale five years ago. Sullivan is going to have to go into the witness protection programme.
Alistair Wiseman: Disgusted with Arsenal. Yes there's been signings but you've just sold two of your top scorers over the last 4 years to rival teams. It's moronic.
The Press Association are reporting that West Brom have rejected an approach from Arsenal for defender Jonny Evans today, with the clubs far apart on their valuations.
The Northern Irishman is not in the Albion squad to face Man City tonight because of injury.
I wouldn't say it's gone quiet but we've had one transfer in the last 40 minutes.

Boro only signed Martin Braithwaite in the summer - they spent about £9m on him...

Bordeaux are close to signing Middlesbrough striker Martin Braithwaite on loan, a fee has been agreed to make the move permanent in the summer.
I’m expecting Boro will now get someone in between now and the deadline to replace him.
That would be in addition to Mo Besic at Everton who they remain keen on but that loan deal has hit a snag and is now up in the air.

Dylan Elvin: Think Newcastle will struggle this season now, we really needed fresh players and we are now gonna pay the price for it. One word to sum them up. Disappointment.
David: In a master turn of events, I've just spotted the whole Burnley squad at St James' Park. 11 late incoming transfers me thinks..
David, you may want to sit down for this...

French football expert on BBC Radio 5 live
Aymeric Laporte is a Pep Guardiola type of player, so good on the ball. He carries the ball into midfield, he is perfect for City and City are perfect for him. City were ready to pay 60m Euros for him in 2016 but he said he was not ready and he wanted to stay at Bilbao.
Now 18 months later they came back for him and he feels ready. He knows now is the time, the World Cup is in six months and he has not been capped by France yet. Didier Deschamps is sceptical about him, physically especially. That is the only question mark over him coming to the Premier League. He will face different types of strikers than in Spain.
He has only been called up once by France and he is even considering switching allegiances to Spain, where he qualifies through residency.

I'm happy with our owners. It’s unfair the so-called top clubs bid so late when they have the whole month of transfer window. Man City left it so late which makes it difficult for Leicester to find a replacement.
