  1. Give Vydra a hand, says Derby bosspublished at 14:35 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2018

    Reading v Derby (15:00 GMT)

When you have the Championship's leading goalscorer on your books you'd presume all would be well in the striking department?

You'd be wrong. Despite Matej Vydra's 17 league goals, Derby boss Gary Rowett wants more from his other forward-thinking players.

"Vydra at the moment is by far and away our most clinical in front of goal, but to have your second-top scorer on six, that needs to be better, I think some of those players now need to step into gear," he told BBC Radio Derby.

The Czech misses out today, so who will step up for the Rams at Reading?

The EFL summer transfer window will close on August 9, instead of at the end of the month, after clubs voted through proposals.

Clubs will still be able to sign players on loan until 31 August, but it is hoped the change will give managers stability once the season starts, while maintaining that flexibility to shuffle the pack in the loan market.

Will it affect your club? It'll be less time to wheel and deal, but means your star player may not get his head turned by a bigger side once the season is under way.

    Mega saleImage source, Rex Features

We've seen clubs sold for £1 in the past, but BBC Radio 5 live sports news correspondent Richard Conway reports Sunderland owner Ellis Short is prepared to give the Championship club away for free.

But, as always, there's a catch. Take the club off his hands and you also take on debts which, according to the last published figures in 2016, stood at £137.3m.

Sunderland are also bottom of the table, staring consecutive relegations in the face. The visit of north-east rivals Middlesbrough this afternoon is gigantic.

    Birmingham v Barnsley (15:00 GMT)

Relegation battles aren't pretty at the best of times but both Birmingham and Barnsley are woefully out of form and simply not scoring goals.

Blues are looking to avoid a fourth consecutive game without scoring, something they last managed during their 2005-06 Premier League relegation campaign.

The Tykes meanwhile lost at home to Burton in Jose Morais' first game in charge, and themselves have found the back of the net just nine times in their past 17 Championship matches.

We had been all set to bring you a full slate of games in League One today, but a frozen pitch has caused the postponement of Oldham's game against Southend at Boundary Park.

There's still plenty of interest to be found in the 11 remaining fixtures, with sixth-placed Charlton hosting second-placed Shrewsbury at the Valley.

Wigan's first game since knocking Manchester City out of the FA Cup sees them host struggling Rochdale, while leaders Blackburn travel to Walsall.

The top two won't change today but there could be movement in the play-off spots, with Aston Villa and Bristol City in particular looking over their shoulders.

Bristol City make the short trip to Cardiff tomorrow and could be overtaken by Middlesbrough, and perhaps Preston North End too, this afternoon.

At the other end it's generally a bit tighter, with some big-name sides finding themselves in precarious positions.

Hull's victory over Sheffield United last night will have raised the anxiety levels amongst fans of all the clubs in that graphic above, as well as Reading supporters.

One thing's for sure - there'll be plenty of new green and red arrows on that table come 17:00 GMT.

  7. EFL transfer window to close earlierpublished at 14:16 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2018

Will transfer deadline day ever be the same again?

This week EFL clubs voted through proposals to shut the summer window for permanent transfers just a few days after the start of the season, on Thursday, 9 August at 17:00 BST, bringing them in line with their Premier League cousins.

The league has also provided clarification on artificial pitches and what constitutes a full strength side, as we approach a stage of the season where some sides have more to play for than others.

FT: Hull City 1-0 Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris WilderImage source, Rex Features

Yes, it's fair to say Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder was far from happy with his side's display at the KCOM Stadium and dismissed their chances of making the play-offs, despite being two points off the top six with 13 games still to play.

"We didn't deserve anything from the game and I'm wasting my time and energy thinking we're going to get into the top six because to produce a performance like we have with everything at stake is not good enough, and won't be good enough to get in the top six," Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"Every part of our game was below the standards that we've set. We've not shown the qualities that are needed to get in the play-offs."

Hull City moved three points clear of the Championship relegation zone with victory over Sheffield United in the first EFL game of the weekend.

But Nouha Dicko's second-half strike wasn't the only talking point as the first half was temporarily halted when Hull fans threw sponge balls on the pitch in protest as the club's owners, the Allam family.

In Pyeongchang day 15 of the Winter Olympics is coming to a close, and the Six Nations cracker between Scotland and England doesn't start until 16:45 GMT.

So we have a nice little window to enjoy the afternoon's EFL action, which includes nine games in the Championship.

No medals or trophies will be handed out today, but those promotion, play-off and relegation battles continue to intensify.
