It was another cheap goal to concede. Daler Kuzyaev’s shot was powerful enough but arrowed into the centre of the net.

Any goalkeeper would most likely feel they have to deal with that. Dorus de Vries appeared to misjudge the flight of the ball, taking a step to his right while the ball turned to his left. He had to do better.

On this evidence, all the good work in the first leg will quickly fade from memory. Celtic need a response.

There could have been movement in the air, but Dorus de Vries certainly took a step to the right and the ball has beaten him down the middle of the goal. You have to put it down to a mistake by the goalkeeper. That is a bit of a disaster for Celtic at this point in the game

If Zenit were rusty after their winter break, they are certainly showing some hot form now.

Daler Kuzyaev picks the ball up 25 yards out and whips a thunderous drive towards goal that goalkeeper Dorus de Vries appears to misjudge and the Russian midfielder's shot bulges the net.

Not such good news for Leandro Parades this time as the midfielder is booked for a cynical trip on James Forrest as the Scotland winger looked to break clear inside the Zenit half.

The Argentine will miss the first leg of the last 16 through suspension should the Russians progress.

More danger for Celtic and it is that man Leandro Paredes again.

The Argentina midfielder is having a major influence, but this time his powerful free-kick from all of 30 yards fails to dip soon enough and flies safely over the crossbar.

Celtic looked fairly comfortable initially, but the concession of that goal was so cheap.

The marking was poor, allowing Ivanovic a free header that he didn’t have to work overly hard to reach.

Brendan Rodgers said yesterday that they had to remain calm no matter what happened and control their emotions.

That’s what is required right now. Celtic remain very much in this tie, but it seems that, if they do it, it is going to be the hard way.

A slack Mikael Lustig pass puts Scott Brown in trouble and Zenit break again.

However, Russia striker Aleksandr Kokorin's attempt to curl the ball into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area is easily held by goalkeeper Dorus de Vries.

He came from the back and no-one was picking him up. You don't allow a player of his quality to get a free header in the middle of the box, eight yards out. It was a bad, bad goal for Celtic to lose - almost shocking defending. Someone has to be responsible for picking Ivanovic up. It's a shocking start for Celtic, very disappointing.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been speaking to host broadcaster BT Sport about the contrast between the temperature inside the stadium (+15C) with the roof on, and outside.

"The contrast is incredible really," he said. "From the moment we stepped off the plane, it has been absolutely freezing - minus 16C, -17C. But it is like a spring evening in here.

"It is a wonderful arena and tonight is a great opportunity for us.

"We need to defend well, with that same spirit and aggression, and, when we have the ball, we want to control the game as much as possible."
