More from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to Match of the Day: "Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has had a few good games. He came from another club with a specific style of play and he need to adapt.

"We cooled him down and told him there is no rush, we really have time. Players like him need to play with instinct - you could see that with the first goal. It was outstanding and I don't think it would've been possible for him a few weeks ago but now it is and I really like it.

"At the moment we are good but we need to stay good to ensure we finish in the top four and more."

Newcastle United

Rafa Benitez, speaking to BT Sport: "We were fine for 40 minutes and tried to control them but needed to create more on the counter attack. We made a mistake in first half and conceded a goal, made a mistake in second half and conceded a goal.

"They are strong, quick and have the possession. We were trying to create on the counter attack but still they were reacting and working to stop us.

"We knew before that it would be difficult. When you make a mistake you pay for it. We were more exposed.

"The mentality, the work-rate, the team spirit is good. We will approach the next game with the same mentality and hopefully have more creativity in attack.

"We need to stay calm, think about the next game. We need to concentrate on every game."

Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Sport: "I very often forget the result during the game so even though we were 2-0 up and I did feel we have to control the game better.

"But then when you step out on the pitch, you realise the wind, so it was difficult to do the right thing in the right moment. We could've controlled it better but I'm happy with the rest of the game.

"We scored two wonderful goals and for sure should have had a penalty but didn't. It's my job to keep my players awake and alive, if I see good moments then I don't have to get up and shout but in the not so good moments I do.

"They defender really well and are a good team with quality. We lost a few balls we don't usually lose and Roberto Firmino didn't have much support. It caused a few problems but not too many.

"We have to score in the right moments and keep a clean sheet and that's what we did so 2-0 is a fantastic result."

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: "It was a difficult game, we knew it was going to be beforehand and we felt it during the game.

"I thought the boys were brilliant and they did what they needed to do. There were two wonderful goals, a few more were possible, and it was a world-class save from Loris Karius. He didn't have much more to do than that. I'm happy.

"Mo Salah is a very offensive midfielder, more of a striker than a holding player. He has this desire for scoring.

"Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is still a young boy, he can be much more consistent and much more of a threat. He doesn't feel a greed for scoring but we will work on that. He's a very important player for us.

"The response is what we'd hoped for [after Coutinho's departure]. He was a world-class player and we miss him, but we don't see it on the pitch. It's the job of the boys to make sure that we don't show that we miss him."

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, speaking to Match of the Day: "I am pleased with the fans. The Liverpool fans were really good for me.

"We were playing against a dangerous team. We know they have the pace up front. We managed to 40 minutes then it was a mistake.

"We had to go for it in the second half and were then more open. You have to keep the balance to be stronger in the defence and create chances in attack.

"We had a few times at the end when we were under pressure. We have to manage our squad.

"We are learning but we are still making mistakes against teams. We are improving but this team has to get points."

Liverpool

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to BBC Sport: "I am enjoying it. I am focused on giving Liverpool that midfield option for now but obviously with the World Cup coming up there is an opportunity. I need to keep working, improving and pushing on.

"We have got different ways of playing and in the end we found a way through. We work on finding players between the lines.

"When you break the line it's about running and creating things. Luckily I could do that with Mo Salah in the first half.

"It is frightening. It has been a great season for Mo. He has kept going, kept pushing on and the goals keep coming.

"You could see he was disappointed not to get another at the end. Hopefully they can keep it going."

Liverpool

Goalscorer Sadio Mane, speaking to BT Sport: "It was not an easy game. They were organised from the beginning but we work hard as a team and try, and try again.

"The midfielders make it easy for us [front three]. It was the whole performance of the team and it was great today."

Liverpool

Man of the match Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, speaking to BT Sport: "Rafa Benitez's side are always well organised. We worked all week on ways to break them down.

"It was getting frustrating in the first half but in the end we managed to get in behind. It was an easy finish in the end.

"Mo Salah is on fire. He has been doing it all season. Sadio Mane has been brilliant too and Bobby [Roberto Firmino] does a lot of hard work that sometimes goes unnoticed.

"We are in a good moment. If we can keep our attitude at 100% we know we have the quality that can hurt teams.

"We need to keep that momentum now. [Jordan] Henderson is the best at staying angry on the pitch. Players like myself and Sadio [Mane] are smilers!"

A tough match for Newcastle but it's hard to know what else they could have done against such a superior side.

They spoiled Liverpool's flow for 40 minutes before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scythed through and set up Mo Salah for his 24th Premier League goal of the season.

The visitors improved after the break, before they were undone by another flowing Liverpool move for Sadio Mane's goal and, at that point, damage limitation may well have been the best way to go.

Newcastle face more critical tests for their Premier League survival, starting with next weekend against Southampton.

I'm not sure that challenge from Lascelles on Salah would have been a penalty if a foul had been awarded. The initial tackle looked to be just outside the box.

Not that it mattered too much to Liverpool in the end. Newcastle will be more relieved not to lose their captain to a ban.

Liverpool are disappointed they didn't get a penalty there but the game was already dead and buried.

Liverpool never got out of second gear, a very professional performance and they got out of this one unscathed.

Things are looking good. There is a momentum. In previous years, they've had injuries to important players around this time but they look in good shape and like a top quality side.

It's a shame City have run away with the league!

And here are those smiles as Jurgen Klopp strides out to embrace his players and salute the home crowd.

So Liverpool move onto 60 points, while Newcastle remain on 29 - two points above the relegation zone.

And that's that.

Despite a comfortable 2-0 win, Liverpool's player and Jurgen Klopp are still visibly livid with that decision not to penalise Jamaal Lascelles.

The smiles will return soon - Liverpool have moved above Manchester United into second.

This time Jamaal Lascelles is caught behind the surging Salah and brings him down on the edge of the area.

Graham Scott looks to his linesman and gives nothing. He's got that wrong - that was a clear foul from Lascelles and would have been a red card.
