Beating the big teams is nice. But beating the teams who come and make no attempt to play football at Anfield is nicer.

    Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

Right, can Liverpool spark again? Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain isn't done yet, playing in Trent Alexander-Arnold before Newcastle concede a corner.

Mo Salah's corner nearly finds its way to Emre Can via Dejan Lovren but Joselu clears for the visitors.

  3. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 65 mins

    Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

First change of the game as Newcastle take off Dwight Gayle for Joselu.

Not the best indicator the visitors are going to score here - the former Stoke man has just four goals all season.

  4. Postpublished at 63 mins

    Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

Very little happening at Anfield right now as Newcastle seemingly go into damage limitation mode.

What's lacking in this Liverpool team right now is the creative pass from midfield to attack, the pass before the assist, much like what KDB does at City. Alonso was the master at this, they help break down the sides sitting deep.

    Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

That Mane strike is Liverpool's 200th Premier League goal under Jurgen Klopp and their 67th of this season.

Newcastle could really do without shipping any more.

That was a beautiful move and a beautiful goal from Liverpool. Mane is a magician.

Some of his footwork and vision is on absolutely another level. A great finish.

I want to see him score a hat-trick now.

GOAL - Liverpool 2-0 Newcastlepublished at 54 mins

    Sadio Mane

    Lovely, just lovely football.

Sadio Mane starts it, clipping the ball to Emre Can, who feeds Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian turns and drives towards the centre of the Newcastle defence, playing in Mane who had peeled off left and curved his run back in.

Mane collects and calmly slots his strike past Martin Dubravka. Is a rout on?

    Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle

Kenedy belts in a deep cross and Lascelles gets up for it but can only clatter Karius as the Liverpool keeper catches the ball.

  10. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 52 mins

    Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle

Sadio Mane does a couple of step overs down the left and tries to find Andrew Robertson in the box.

The ball is hacked out but straight into the path of Mo Salah, who cracks a first-time strike that deflects away off Jamaal Lascelles.

Liverpool appeal for the penalty - nothing given. It did strike Lascelles' arm but it wasn't intentional and his arm was low as he jumped to block. Right decision.

Amrul Choudhury: Incredible to think the amount of chances Mo Salah missed earlier in the season. Right now he could have had Messi and Ronaldo-esque goals record, 50+.

July 1st: 32 goals for a winger. Absolutely mental.

    Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle

Roberto Firmino does exceptionally well to play in Mo Salah down the right.

The winger tries to get it under control in the area but Paul Dummett stands up well to put it out for a corner before Newcastle clear.

    Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle

Newcastle press much higher up the pitch than they did in the first half straight away and force Trent Alexander-Arnold to twice slice the ball out for a throw.

Sick of seeing everyone criticise Newcastle's defensive approach in games against the likes of City and Liverpool. It's a Championship team and Benitez is pragmatic. We attacked Man United from the outset and won a couple of weeks back - there's more than one way to try to win football matches.

This is the 26th competitive game that Mo Salah has scored in this season - no other player within the top four tiers of English football has scored in more than 21 different club matches in 2017-18.

Liverpool don't look to have got out of second gear, they're finding it very easy to stroke the ball around.

There's not that much high tempo from Newcastle. Liverpool need to show a bit more tempo in the second half too. It's a dangerous scoreline.

Newcastle weren't going to pose that much threat, their team is vastly inferior to the Liverpool team.

I imagine Liverpool will come out all guns blazing in the second half and put Newcastle to the sword.

Any way back for Newcastle after the interval?

They created next to nothing before that Mo Diame belter that brought a fine save from Loris Karius.

Given how tight the bottom half is, Newcastle cannot afford to ship goals at Anfield, should their initial aims of a point or three be beyond them.

    Sit back or attack?

Luke Pedley: Fantastic by Oxlade-Chamberlain in that move. Direct, mobile and intelligent from midfield. Surely playing his way into Southgate’s England side.

Liam Henton: If only we had a team of Mohamed Salahs
