Not the most thrilling 45 minutes anyone at Old Trafford will have seen, but let's not forget the game is being played in some pretty horrible wintry conditions.

Anyway, United lead 1-0 thanks to Romelu Lukaku's header and they are only 45 minutes away from joining Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Brighton will have to come out and attack in the second half and give this one a real go.

    Man Utd 1-0 Brighton

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

In his much-publicised press conference yesterday, Jose Mourinho cited Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku as positive examples to follow.

They combined to put United one-up.

Two men Mourinho did not mention, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez, are on the bench.

In that press conference, Mourinho made the kind of negative assessments David Moyes was castigated for and many United fans have registered their displeasure on various public forums.

However, support for Mourinho has come from the 'singing section' which tonight has been moved to the section normally reserved for the visiting supporters.

The United fans in there chanted Mourinho's name earlier. There was no response from the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss.

I've been impressed by Scott McTominay. His passing is lovely and when he does something, he does it with purpose.

He is the one who is dictating the pace of the game and wants to get on the ball, which is great to see from such a young player.

A bustling move into the box by Jesse Lingard but he is crowded out and can't get a shot off.

At the other end, Leonardo Ulloa has only had scraps to feed off. A ball is played into the area, but he can't get his head on it.

PJ: Brilliant ball in from Matic and a good header by Lukaku!!

Nokeeroe: In the end simplicity was the key. Lukaku from close range.

Fantastic ball from Nemanja Matic. Floats it in, and as a defender those are tough to defend. The centre forward will always get the run on you and it is difficult to read the flight of the ball. Good finish from Lukaku.

That will improve the atmosphere at Old Trafford. We said the best way to attack may be an aerial route and that is how United take the lead.

Nemanja Matic does well to float a ball into the back post, Romelu Lukaku gets above Lewis Dunk and powers in a header past Tim Krul.

Goal number 25 of the season for the Belgian.

Jose Mourinho would have been hoping for a wonderfully attacking confident performance from his side to silence any growing critics.

He hasn't had that yet from his side, who are still to have a shot on target. Quiet and cold at Old Trafford.

  10. 'Free header will annoy Mourinho'published at 20:21 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2018

    Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

    Stephen Warnock
    Ex-Liverpool defender at Old Trafford

It was a free header for Lewis Dunk from the corner, which will annoy Jose Mourinho. It was a good save from Romero. He deserves some credit, you really have to keep your concentration in games like this and he's been untested for 35 minutes.

A good chance for Brighton, and Dunk will be disappointed.

A chance at the other end. Lewis Dunk loses his marker, Scott McTominay, and powers a free header at goal.

United goalkeeper Sergio Romero makes it look more acrobatic than he needed to. Maybe he didn't want to catch it because of the slippy conditions and in the end he uses both fists to punch it clear.

Nevertheless, it stays out, which is all that matters. Still goalless. Signs of warming up. Well, not literally. It still looks freezing out there and, there is still a heavy layer of snow on the turf.

  12. Dunk and Duffy Brighton's 'heartbeat'published at 20:17 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2018

    Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

    Stephen Warnock

Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy are such a great partnership, The have gelled so well, they really are the heartbeat of the team. Whenever Brighton get a good result, more often that not it is those two who have a good game

Better from United. Juan Mata's shot is deflected for a corner. Brighton fail to deal with the set-piece and after a scramble it falls to Chris Smalling, who is close in but at a tight angle. He prods goal-bound, but the ball hits the outside of the post.

Once again, Brighton just through sheer weight of numbers, stop another United attack. The home fans will be buoyed by the performance of Anthony Martial, who has looked lively, but not many others have caught the eye though.

One thing Jose Mourinho does have though is options on the bench. Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini are all among the substitutes, hoping they will not have a cold, frustrating evening.

  16. Postpublished at 27 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

Romelu Lukaku does some good defending to head the corner clear at the near post. The ball falls to Solly March, 30 yards out.

He has probably always dreamed of scoring a 30-yard left-footed volley at Old Trafford. He is still dreaming. The 30-yard left-footed volley is an absolute waste when he could have recycled the ball back into the box.

    High, wide, ugly.

Solly March's low cross is cleared, rather unconvincingly by Eric Bailly, who sends it behind for Brighton's first corner.

Things have been a bit more positive from Manchester United.

However, although they are playing high up, the play is slow and lethargic. You would like to see more overlapping runs from players out wide, but it's not happening at the moment.

The corner is headed away, before Antonio Valencia's cross is headed clear at the near post by Lewis Dunk. Leonardo Ulloa is the lone Brighton man, but he has no team-mates 20 yards around him. Defend deep, defend in numbers.

Another cross from Valencia finds Anthony Martial free at the back post but the ball bounces off his leg and the chance vanishes away.
