"Of all the things we just need a bit of luck," said former Wales boss Coleman. "I can't have any luck.

“Whatever was needed I never brought it, over 46 games we’ve not been good enough. We had a lot of games to get it right.

“In games certain things happen, you can't do anything about it on the training ground or in the office, crazy things happen and you have to deal with it. I know exactly what needs to be done, I hope I get the chance to do it.”

Amid all the promotions and relegations today it might have slipped by that Chesterfield's relegation to the National League was all-but confirmed.

The Spireites are nine points adrift of 22nd-place Morecambe with three games to play but their inferior goal difference means catching the Shrimps is almost impossible.

"I just want to apologise to the fans for what has gone on," boss Jack Lester told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I'm as sad as they are. There's nothing worse in football."

Aston Villa kept themselves just about in the automatic promotion mix with a big win at Ipswich this afternoon.

Fulham stay second but that could all change when Cardiff host Nottingham Forest tonight (19:45 BST).

Luton will join Accrington in the third tier and Nathan Jones' side could yet still take the League Two title in theory, although they are six points behind Stanley.

The Hatters started the season with an 8-2 home win over Yeovil and have been in the top three since a 7-0 win at home to Cambridge United on 18 November.

With 84 goals, they are the second-highest scorers in England's top four divisions, behind only Premier League winners Manchester City.

Five of their players - striker Danny Hylton, midfielder Luke Berry, defender Alan Sheehan, full-back Dan Potts and goalkeeper Marek Stech - were named in the PFA's League Team of the Year on Tuesday.

Sunderland were relegated to League One after falling to a 2-1 home defeat by Burton.

Black Cats boss Chris Coleman said he wants to stay on at the club but does not know if he will be kept on.

"I think I'm the right man for the job but there's certain things that I need and this club needs," he told BBC Newcastle.

"I know what needs to be done here. Whether or not I get the chance to do it remains to be seen.

"We don't know what's happening above us. It's impossible to have a plan because we don't know if we're going to have new owners and what their plan might be."

He added: "I just thought as tough as it has been there was a chance we could do it.

"I feel anger, frustration and sadness really. It's the lowest I've been in my managerial career. It's a sense of helplessness."

While the result at the Stadium of Light was terminal for Sunderland, Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough was "delighted" to see his side pick up a result that kept them in the race to stay up.

"I thought we deserved it based on our second-half performance," Clough told BBC Radio Derby.

"Unfortunately it means that Sunderland are down but it still gives us that glimmer of hope that we can take into the last two games."

Burton's hopes of avoiding relegation could end on Tuesday if Barnsley beat Nottingham Forest in their game in hand.

Here's how it stands at the bottom of the Championship, with Sunderland's relegation confirmed.

It was a very good day for Birmingham City, who moved five points cleat of the drop zone, while Burton gave themselves real hope.

It's Burton v Bolton next weekend. Eeek.

Wolves secured the Championship title with a comprehensive 4-0 win at struggling Bolton.

Boss Nuno Espirito Santo was delighted to ensure top spot in front of almost 5,000 travelling fans.

"It's special for the fans who travel so much and we're really thankful for what they have been doing," he told BBC WM.

"We showed our character and discipline.

"I'm very proud because we never had doubts. The way we played today and the effort of the boys was fantastic.

"The title is for the club, for the city and for our fans."

Macclesfield were relegated to the National League in April 2012 after a 12-year stay in the Football League.

This season John Askey's Silkmen have been top of the table since 9 December and rarely looked like relinquishing top spot.

Aldershot closed to within a point of them on 27 January, but a sequence of just one defeat in their subsequent 13 games has seen them pull away from the rest of the league to be crowned champions and secure promotion.

Promotion to League One ends Luton's decade outside the top three tiers of English football.

They were relegated to League Two in April 2008 and fell out of the Football League altogether the following campaign after being deducted a record 30 points for entering administration for the third time in 10 years.

John Still guided them to promotion out of the National League in 2013-14 before he was replaced by Nathan Jones in December 2016.

The Welshman led the the Hatters to the play-offs last season but they've gone one better this time.

The success Wigan have had this season marks a stark change in fortunes after their relegation from the Championship last term.

The Latics were relegated from the Premier League a few days after winning the FA Cup in 2013 and, despite reaching both the FA Cup and Championship play-off semi-finals the following season, they were eventually relegated to League One in 2014-15.

Promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking was achieved under Gary Caldwell in 2015-16, but the Scot was sacked in October 2016 after a poor start to the season and the Latics' return to the second tier lasted just one campaign before they dropped back to League One.

However, under Cook - who joined from Portsmouth at the start of the season after getting Pompey promoted from League Two last term - the ship has been steadied at the DW Stadium.

Scoring more goals and conceding fewer than any other team in League One this season, it has been a fine season for Paul Cook's Wigan side.

Four of their players - defenders Dan Burn and Nathan Byrne as well as forwards Nick Powell and Will Grigg - were named in the PFA League One Team of the Year on Wednesday.

Promotion has capped a memorable season in which Wigan also reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, beating Premier League champions Manchester City and two other top-flight teams before losing to Southampton in the last eight.

Fair to say that Sunderland fan Alex and Luton fan James are going through very different emotions right now.

Their teams will play each other in League One next season.

The turnover of managers at Sunderland and lack of consistency has been cited as a factor in the decline at the Stadium of Light, with seven managers in five years.

It's not much more stable at boardroom level, with owner Ellis Short so far failing to sell the club despite being prepared to give it away for free if a buyer can be found to take on their substantial debt.

How Sunderland will look in League One come August is anyone's guess, but personnel changes have not altered the losing mentality at the Stadium of Light.
