Summary

  • Full-time score: Manchester City 0-0 Lyon

  • Second leg in France on 29 April

  • Man City and Chelsea aiming to be first English club to reach Champions League final since 2007

  1. YELLOW CARD (Bronze)published at 27 mins

    Manchester City 0-0 Lyon

Lyon's Lucy Bronze may be playing against her old club and international colleagues, but she isn't going easy on them.

The full-back lunges in recklessly on Nikita Parris and is correctly given the game's first yellow card.

Winger Parris has pace to burn, so Bronze will need to be on our best behaviour.

  2. GREAT SAVE!published at 25 mins

    Manchester City 0-0 Lyon

Melissa Lawley forces Lyon keeper Sarah Bouhaddi into a useful save, and what a through ball by Nikita Parris.

Parris came off the left flank and thread a pass into Lawley's path - she toe-pokes towards goal and Bouhaddi tips it over.

Great, penetrative play from Manchester City.

Without a recognised striker Manchester City are struggling to make the ball stick in the Lyon half.

They have Jane Ross on the bench, who helped them reach the last four and can do that more physical job.

City are just about keeping Lyon at arms length for now, though.

  4. CLOSE!published at 17 mins

    Manchester City 0-0 Lyon

The French side go close again through Dzsenifer Marozsan.

A throw-in falls to the Germany international, she nudges the ball inside and lets fly from 25 yards, the shot speeding just wide of Karen Bardsley's far post.

I think the Manchester City keeper just about had it covered.

  5. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Manchester City 0-0 Lyon

Manchester City have their first shot and the forward move was all down to Melissa Lawley's pace and trickery.

The winger took the hosts from one end to the other and when she was tackled, Izzy Christiansen was there to have a go from the edge of the box.

Sarah Bouhaddi made the simple save.

    Manchester City 0-0 Lyon

After a decent start Lyon have their tails up.

They're pressing Manchester City all over the pitch and the English side are just about coping.

Nick Cushing's team will need to be at their very best to get a positive result out of this semi-final first leg.

Lyon are so fluid, their players can play three or four different positions, they know their roles inside out and and they always perform on the big stage.

  9. CLOSE!published at 6 mins

    Manchester City 0-0 Lyon

    But there's a warning of Lyon's threat.

England captain Steph Houghton gives the ball away and fellow City defender Demi Stokes blocks Eugenie Le Sommer's shot.

That was certainly goalbound, and Houghton denies Shanice van de Sanden with the rebound.

  10. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Manchester City 0-0 Lyon

Manchester City are operating with a 'false nine', with Izzy Christiansen their most advanced player.

That seems to be a fashionable formation at the moment and the hosts will hope it gives them more possession and control of the tie.

City have started positively, keeping the ball nicely without threatening too much yet.

  11. KICK-OFFpublished at 1 min

    Manchester City 0-0 Lyon

The Manchester City players form a huddle on the side of the pitch, unusually, but that's all done now and we're under way in this Champions League semi-final first leg.

It promises to be a well-matched European tie, we hope.

They're top players, big games are coming thick and fast for Manchester City.

I'm sure the players who made the mistakes (in the FA Cup defeat by Chelsea) will have done their best to rectify that this week.

Errors by centre-backs Steph Houghton and Jennifer Beattie led to Chelsea's two goals in that semi-final match - they may well be called upon a lot today against arguably the best club side in Europe.

There's a good crowd in Manchester and plenty of sky blue flags among the fans.

I get the feeling the hosts are trying to create an atmosphere similar to that seen at England Women's games, which is very impressive.

We're kicking off slightly late, but we're almost there now...

We're approaching kick-off at the Academy Stadium - it's Manchester City with home advantage in this first leg. Away goals can be vital, remember.

The English hosts are three points behind WSL 1 leaders Chelsea, who play Wolfsburg in their semi-final first leg later.

Opponents Lyon, meanwhile, are cruising in the French league and are 11 points clear, needing two points from their final four games to win a 12th consecutive domestic title.

Manchester City boss Nick Cushing knows first-hand how strong opponents Lyon are - they knocked his side out at the same stage last season on their way to winning the Champions League.

"We know it's doing to be difficult. It is what it is. They are the greatest team in the world," Cushing told BBC Radio 5 live.

"They have a plethora of talent but we're a good team as well and we have nothing to lose.

"To get to the semi-finals two years on the run shows we're one of the best teams in Europe. We just can't wait for the game."

In women's football, English sides have rarely been a force in Europe... until now.

It is the first time there have been two English teams in the last four of the Women's Champions League, with Manchester City and Chelsea aiming to emulate Arsenal's European triumph in 2007.

Manchester City are first up against Lyon, who have won the competition in the past two seasons and boast BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year Ada Hegerberg in attack.

Welcome to our coverage of the first leg of this semi-final tie.
