Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson told BT Sport: "It is disappointing, of course. We did well to get the goal and get back into the game but made mistakes and Real Madrid were really good. They are a fantastic side and will always hurt you, they deserved to win and were better on the night.

"The first 30 or 35 minutes, we dominated with the ball, had a couple of chances but it is frustrating. You have to give credit to them.

"When Mo Salah got injured they started to dominate with the ball. They scored a goal which was offside in the first half but we stayed in the game. We still believed we could go on but there were a couple of goals on another night which would not have gone in."

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the European Cup for the fifth time (2008, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018). Only Paco Gento has won the title more often (six times - 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1966).

All of Gento's were at Real Madrid, one of Ronaldo's was with Manchester United.

Ex Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard speaking on BT Sport: "On a human level you can feel sadness for Loris Karius.

"That's with him for life now. Mistakes like this are not for this level, the Champions League final. The first one, which kind of changed the momentum of the game, I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"It's a horrible moment for him. he needs some big support from his team-mates now. He didn’t mean that but it’s cost them the game."

Marcelo became the first player with two assists in a Champions League final since Henrik Larsson in 2006.

He has now given three assists in Champions League finals - a joint record with J League player Andres Iniesta.

Real defender Marcelo is cutting the net for some reason. Maybe he's a fisherman and can't afford to buy one himself.

They may try to put Mohamed Salah's shoulder back in, put it in a sling and there's a possibility he can play in three or four weeks. But it is never the same. He has got a big decision to make.

Most who have played who have dislocated shoulders will tell you if don't have an operation it will always come out. Once you loosen it, it is never the same.

Former England and Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard on BT Sport: "Gareth Bale's been pivotal in finals. He's a great player because only the absolute best can score that goal.

"A fit Gareth Bale is an absolute specimen."

And former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard on Bale's future: "It's the first time I've heard him speak in that tone. It's the first time I've hear him say 'come and get me quick'."

My colleague called this the final of tears.

Robert: Zidane did what he had to do to save his job. Defeated PSG, Juventus, Bayern and now Liverpool to win the trophy. They're not an exciting team to watch these days, but their pragmatism and determination in this competition is peerless.

Kapalu: Amazing to think both Bale and Zidane's futures at Real have been in so much doubt.

Zinedine Zidane has never been knocked out of Europe as a manager.

Sergio Ramos holds the trophy up in the air and Real Madrid are champions of Europe for a record 13th time.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand speaking on BT Sport: "Zinedine Zidane got it right. Gareth Bale came off the bench and his price tag will have gone up again. He's a fantastic player.

"He has all the attributes to cause devastation in an attacking area and he delivers on the big stage."

For periods Liverpool had a go, were good in the first 30 minutes, but Real Madrid know how to win football matches.

Liverpool need to move on from this, get two or three players to be at this level.

Real Madrid now go up to lift the Champions League trophy for the third season in a row (and the fourth season in five).

They are practically invincible in this tournament. It's remarkable really.

Real finished 17 points behind Barcelona in La Liga but they are kings of Europe again.

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale on BT Sport: "Obviously I was very disappointed not to start the game, I felt I deserved it but the manager makes the decisions. The best I have been doing is to come on and make an impact, I certainly did.

"It has to be the best goal in a Champions League final, there is no bigger stage. I am just happy to get the win.

"It is a team game but when you are a substitute, it is a game of more than 11 players. I made an impact.

"We know what we have achieved and how good we have been. The league was disappointing but we won the Champions League. It turns out to be a great season.

"We let everyone else speak. We know how hungry we are in the changing room, how prepared and motivated we are."

Asked about his future: "I need to be playing week in, week out and that has not happened this season. I had an injury five, six weeks in but fit ever since. I have to sit down with my agent in the summer and discuss it."

Now Real Madrid players give Liverpool a guard of honour as they go up to get their runners-up medals.

Some players instantly take theirs off - some keep theirs on.
