More from Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson to BT Sport: "The first goal I am not sure what happened, whether Karim Benzema stopped it with his hand, and then the overhead kick he could do nothing about. The third goal, the ball had loads of movement on it. It is not the mistakes Loris Karius made, we got to the final as a team and lose as a team. It is about everybody.

"We were not good enough on the night, and I am so proud of the players and the fans who came out for us on the night. I hope we can carry on and get into more finals and use it going forward.

"Football moves forward, we have a World Cup coming up so you have to move on and the season starts really quickly. We have to be proud of getting here. It will hurt for a while but we have to keep going."

  2. 'Real deserved to win'published at 22:14 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

    Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson told BT Sport: "It is disappointing, of course. We did well to get the goal and get back into the game but made mistakes and Real Madrid were really good. They are a fantastic side and will always hurt you, they deserved to win and were better on the night.

"The first 30 or 35 minutes, we dominated with the ball, had a couple of chances but it is frustrating. You have to give credit to them.

"When Mo Salah got injured they started to dominate with the ball. They scored a goal which was offside in the first half but we stayed in the game. We still believed we could go on but there were a couple of goals on another night which would not have gone in."

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the European Cup for the fifth time (2008, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018). Only Paco Gento has won the title more often (six times - 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1966).

All of Gento's were at Real Madrid, one of Ronaldo's was with Manchester United.

Ex Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard speaking on BT Sport: "On a human level you can feel sadness for Loris Karius.

"That's with him for life now. Mistakes like this are not for this level, the Champions League final. The first one, which kind of changed the momentum of the game, I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"It's a horrible moment for him. he needs some big support from his team-mates now. He didn’t mean that but it’s cost them the game."

They may try to put Mohamed Salah's shoulder back in, put it in a sling and there's a possibility he can play in three or four weeks. But it is never the same. He has got a big decision to make.

Most who have played who have dislocated shoulders will tell you if don't have an operation it will always come out. Once you loosen it, it is never the same.

A nice touch by Napoli who tweeted (via google translate): "Don't cry @LorisKarius, a crooked night can happen to everyone. Courage Champion. A hug from the @sscnapoli."

Not so much class from Morecambe: "Just had the call from Karius’ agent. Sorry, no go."

And former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard on Bale's future: "It's the first time I've heard him speak in that tone. It's the first time I've hear him say 'come and get me quick'."

Robert: Zidane did what he had to do to save his job. Defeated PSG, Juventus, Bayern and now Liverpool to win the trophy. They're not an exciting team to watch these days, but their pragmatism and determination in this competition is peerless.

Kapalu: Amazing to think both Bale and Zidane's futures at Real have been in so much doubt.

Real Madrid now go up to lift the Champions League trophy for the third season in a row (and the fourth season in five).

  19. Bale to consider future this summerpublished at 21:51 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

    Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale on BT Sport: "Obviously I was very disappointed not to start the game, I felt I deserved it but the manager makes the decisions. The best I have been doing is to come on and make an impact, I certainly did.

"It has to be the best goal in a Champions League final, there is no bigger stage. I am just happy to get the win.

"It is a team game but when you are a substitute, it is a game of more than 11 players. I made an impact.

"We know what we have achieved and how good we have been. The league was disappointing but we won the Champions League. It turns out to be a great season.

"We let everyone else speak. We know how hungry we are in the changing room, how prepared and motivated we are."

Asked about his future: "I need to be playing week in, week out and that has not happened this season. I had an injury five, six weeks in but fit ever since. I have to sit down with my agent in the summer and discuss it."
