Two-goal scorer Denis Cheryshev says (via a translator): "There are no words to express what I'm feeling right now. I'm so happy for my family who have struggled with my injuries - they deserve this.

"I could never have dreamed of anything like this."

I've seen a few tweets point out that it was Ramadan and Saudi Arabia players were fasting.

I've found some articles, but nothing definitive, to suggest they have broken their fast intermittently in the build-up to the tournament.

That game is the biggest margin of victory in an outright World Cup opener ever.

That's not including the years (1930, 1934, 1954, 1962) that several games kicked off at the same time to start the tournament.

Denis Cheryshev is the first sub to score twice in a World Cup game since Andre Schurrle against Brazil (7-1) in 2014.

That sounds more impressive until you realise that was only three games ago.

There was so much late action, that in case you missed any of it, here's the breakdown.

    Denis Cheryshev - two goals

Aleksandr Golovin - one goal and two assists

Artem Dzyuba - one goal and one assist

    Yuri Gazinskiy - one goal

    Roman Zobnin - one assist

John: Worst team at a finals since El Salvador in the 80s..Why don’t teams ever play that bad against England?

VB: If Uruguay make an effort they could well get 40 goals against this Saudi team

Thomas: The Saudis looked intimidated, unambitious, lacked ideas and a star player to finish moves

    FT: Russia 5-0 Saudi Arabia

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC Radio 5 live

It has been a really positive night for Russia who have done what they had to do, but I don't think the big boys will be too worried by that performance. Saudi Arabia were hopeless and they didn't have one effort on target.

I don't even know what to make of that. 5-0 in the opening game of a World Cup.

But did Russia even play that well? It's hard to know. Saudi Arabia were terrible.
