WHAT a five minutes that was. Fernando Hierro should have taken his jacket off ages ago and finally has done. Sleeves rolled up, nerves on edge, he is living this match as much as his eleven players are right now.

Fernando Hierro is far more animated inside the Spain technical area after that goal. He is clearly growing into the role. I even think he is starting to enjoy it now.

...straight at the wall. Spain aren't done yet, but that leaves the chance of another Portugal break.

Is there chance to take a breath?

All happening! Spain think it's two thanks to an Isco bullet, they plead for a replay when the ball bounces off the bar. They make boxes with their hands, TV symbols, but replays show it didn't cross the line.

    We need a Russian linesman...

I think Costa was looking at the ball, no intent.

It was the first time I have seen Spain play a long ball to the strengths of Costa.

It was the first time in 24 minutes and shows what happens if you go early, go a bit direct. It was a wonderful finish, you can't fault that. Great ball from Busquets too.

What a finish. Talk about strength and calmness. That's how we remember Diego Costa at his best for Chelsea, but Pepe has gone down far too easily.

Yes, Diego Costa has absolutely bullied his side back into this, but Jordi Alba has to go down as the big hero for Spain. It was his last-ditch block that stopped Goncalo Guedes before, with just the keeper to beat. No-one would have backed them coming into this again from 2-0 down.

GOAL - Portugal 1-1 Spainpublished at 23 mins

    Diego Costa

Incredible goal! Diego Costa has danced through the Portugal defence to equalise for Spain. From nothing, he takes a long ball, flattening one defender in the process. On the edge of the box, he twists one way then another, leaving three more red shirts floundering. The finish into the corner is cool as you like. What a wonderful game.

Portugal are so dangerous on the counter. From a Spain counter, Cristiano Ronaldo again finds himself running at the Spain defence, two on two. He cuts it inside for Bruno Fernandes, who dithers and the chance is gone. Ronaldo is livid.

Spain down the left again. Andres Iniesta (does he ever age?) and David Silva causing havoc. If you missed it, here's the Portugal goal. Penalty or not?

    Portugal 1-0 Spain

Sergio Busquets goes in the book for a studs-up challenge on Gonçalo Guedes. From the resulting free-kick, Cristiano Ronaldo runs up like Jonny Wilkinson and nearly takes the head off a member of the Spanish wall.

This shouldn't be a big deal for Spain. A lot of their players play for Barcelona or Real Madrid, they face teams who sit back and defend a lot.

Little triangles from the Spanish, a lesson in geometry. What was it Sir Alex Ferguson said about playing the old Barcelona side? "Like being on a carousel"? Andres Iniesta conducts the orchestra, Cristiano Ronaldo having to feed off scraps on the break. Mind you, the Spanish defence look terrified of him.

I haven't seen a replay of the incident, so it's hard to call on the legitimacy of the pen. It's been all Spain since they went behind, though. They are getting joy down the left. You don't need to see when Cristiano Ronaldo gets the ball. Just close your eyes and hear the noise double.
