    Portugal 1-0 Spain

    Patrick Jennings

It was just never in doubt was it. Cristiano Ronaldo was never going to pass that one up. Spain are looking shell-shocked. Their terrible week in the south of Russia just gets worse. And the thunderstorms are coming.

    Portugal 1-0 Spain

Spain have recovered pretty well, knocking the ball around, alebit in front of a wall of red. Portugal are harrying, pestering, all while the Sochi crowd chants. David Silva gets an inch of space at the edge of the box, but fires over. Excellent stuff this.

Super penalty from a wonderful player. Great pace on the ball and David de Gea has no chance. Portugal have started brightly and it's a deserved lead.

    Portugal 1-0 Spain

Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

I thought he left his left leg in so it's harsh on Nacho and the referee has bought it. It's a great penalty, sends De Gea the wrong way. What a start for Portugal, Spain never got out the traps and they are chasing the game already,

    It had to be him.

Cristiano Ronaldo gives Portugal the lead from the spot, sending David de Gea the wrong way.

He wheels off in celebration, screaming into the Sochi night. The Fisht Stadium is going a different kind of bonkers.

    Incredible start.

I've just seen shots of the video officials. There's loads of them, staring at a wall of screens. They look like they are trying to land a spacecraft on the moon.

Cristiano Ronaldo smiled all the way through the Portugal national anthem, belting it out like he was singing in Carnegie Hall. He would probably back himself to do that. If we're handing out pints for anthems, Portugal are 1-0 up.

The players have emerged from the tunnel to the tune of Seven Nation Army. The captains, Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo, are Real Madrid team-mates but haven't even looked at each other. Portugal, the 'home' team, are in their traditional red currant. Spain are all in white.

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Cristiano (Ronaldo) is just a ridiculous professional. Put the talent to one side and it's the mentality that is key to his success. To sustain that level for so many years, you have to have a particular drive and determination. He was the first person I saw employing nutritionists, a doctor and a chef at Manchester United and he invested in himself.

The stats around Ronaldo are ridiculous. 151 caps, 81 goals, the list goes on and on. Staggering.

At 33, this is expected to be his last World Cup so he will be desperate to do well in Russia..

  14. 'Ronaldo does more for Portugal'published at 18:51 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    Portugal v Spain (19:00 BST)

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 live

Ronaldo is different for Real Madrid and Portugal

In Madrid he doesn't have to do much, even with his ego he has accepted he has to do less. Now he's a one-touch goal machine.

For Portugal, there are always wide players, who cut inside, so he drops deep and gets assists.

His main influence is around the box but he gets involved in the build-up.

Sergio Ramos is the most influential defender on the planet right now. When the trophies are there to be handed out he puts the shirt on and leads from the front.

    Cesc Fabregas
Chelsea and Spain midfielder on BBC One

Diego Costa has always played in teams with a different style to what we see with Spain. Sometimes he gets frustrated because his runs are normally very good, so it’s up to the midfielders to see it. He definitely needs to adapt to what Spain have been doing for many years but we could also use him better than we do.

Night has fallen in Sochi, a city more recently famous for hosting the Winter Olympics.

The Fisht Stadium is something out of a sci-fi film, the two sides almost touch, like a roof that was left with a hole in the middle. This ground was, in fact, built for the Winters, but converted for the World Cup.

Sochi, by the way, is a coastal resort. Stalin liked to visit.

We all admire how Spain play but he can get so frustrated.

Spain will need to keep going forward to get the best out of him.

  20. 'Costa doesn't fit Spain'published at 18:42 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    Portugal v Spain (19:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

I am not sure Diego Costa fits in to this Spain side. He's more of a battering ram, likes the ball early. He's not going to drop off and link the play. That is a problem for me when I look at that team.
