    Costa Rica 0-0 Serbia

Big big chance. And Costa Rica should be ahead from a well worked short corner.

David Guzman whips the ball to the back post but Giancarlo Gonzalez misses the target. That was a free header. Third time lucky perhaps?

  2. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Costa Rica 0-0 Serbia

Serbia's left-back Aleksandar Kolarov hits one from distance but it's well wide of the far post. Probably the wrong option.

  3. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Costa Rica 0-0 Serbia

Forget tiki-taka this has been quite a direct, physical opening so far.

Plenty of long balls. As yet little guile.

  4. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Costa Rica 0-0 Serbia

Costa Rica respond and Giancarlo Gonzalez should really do better with a header from a corner.

The Bologna defender will be disappointed with that effort which went straight at the keeper.

  5. Postpublished at 1 mins

    Costa Rica 0-0 Serbia

Good start from Serbia with Aleksandar Mitrovic almost twice getting firm touches on balls into the penalty area.

Costa Rica are not necessarily battling for second in the group. Cast your mind back to 2014 they topped a group of England, Italy and Uruguay. There is no reason they can’t do it today, if you get a good start you can start to dream bigger. On paper of course Brazil are favourites.

Costa Rica v Serbia (13:00 BST)

It looked as though Aleksandar Kolarov tweaked something in the warm-up but he is leading Serbia out as the teams enter the pitch so should start this game.

Will be interesting to see how he holds up.

Soap stars aside who's likely to take centre stage this afternoon?

Aleksander Mitrovic's 12 league goals had quite a bit to do with Fulham's promotion to the Premier League.

The big question is can he do it on the biggest stage? I guess we're about to find out.

I've been looking down the Costa Rica squad today and spotted Ian Smith among them.

Just to clarify that's not the same Ian Smith who played Harold Bishop in the soap Neighbours for more years than I care to remember.

Which I hope this picture makes clear.

We can all picture our favourite team and player moments, but what about when things haven't quite worked out to plan?

I have to admit I'm not sure I would want to tempt fate by practicing goal celebrations, dancing or an attempt at team unity on social media - what if things go wrong on the pitch?

It seems that the Serbian players, external don't quite share my view.

Not to be outdone on the interest stakes what about the Serbia head coach. Mladen Krstajic fills his spare time owning a distillery, running a motel and following agricultural interests.

"I can put on a suit and tie when needed but I also like to sit on a bottle crate after a hard day's work and share a beer with my tractor men," he said.

    Oscar RamirezImage source, Getty Images

If Costa Rica do need a word upstairs to help them progress perhaps coach Oscar Ramirez is the perfect man to do so.

Apparently he only accepted the job after consulting a local priest - I had to get that in.

After all it is a Sunday, the Lord's day and all that.

He's got quite a personality by all accounts, promising to shave off his hair if Costa Rica reached the finals. Keylor Navas duly obliged after a dramatic late equaliser against Honduras last October.

Ramirez played for his country at the Italia 90 finals.

  19. Playing for second?published at 12:14 British Summer Time 17 June 2018

Costa Rica v Serbia (13:00 BST)

    Keylor NavasImage source, Getty Images

These two nations are far from tournament big hitters - even if there are some extremely impressive cv's on show this afternoon.

Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas, with three consecutive Champions League winners medals at Real Madrid is testimony to that.

On the Serbia side Nemanja Matic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic fuse experience with youth in an enterprising midfield that also contains the creative talents of Adem Ljajic and Dusan Tadic.

But despite all that there's a feeling that this is a prelude to who can finish second to Brazil.

Keylor Navas starts in goal for Costa Rica, three weeks on from helping Real Madrid win the Champions League.

Sunderland's Bryan Oviedo is on the bench along with Joel Campbell, still of Arsenal, not that their fans would know it following a series of loan spells away. Also on the bench is Rodney Wallace (not that one).

Ex-Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has been named in Serbia's starting XI. As a result he will overtake former Inter Milan midfielder Dejan Stankovic to become Serbia's most capped player with 104 international appearances.

There is a healthy Premier League presence in the side in the shape of Luka Milivojevic, Nemanja Matic, Dusan Tadic and Aleksandar Mitrovic. Aleksandar Kolarov (once of Man City) also starts.

Midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is a potential star to watch.
