The pundits in the studio are impressing the need for England to start the game quickly. They did that well against Tunisia - it could have been 2-0 inside six minutes.

Gaz 72: After getting beat by an Icelandic team whose population filled the squad...I take NOTHING for granted!

Matthew Jones: Can’t believe people moaning Marcus Rashfird not starting. He’s best used as an impact player i.e sub.

Jake Woolhead: Keeping Raheem Sterling in the starting 11 could be good move.. if he can grab a goal or two today it could be the start of Sterling at this World Cup.

My role is to take information back to the age group sides, not just on the pitch but behind the scenes. It has been a fascinating insight watching Gareth and the team work. If we consider those three tournament wins in Toulon, it is about the players coming through and the work being done behind the scenes. It is a really exciting time to work for England and be an England fan.

Huge roar around the stadium here in Nizhny Novgorod as England captain Harry Kane's picture flashes on the big screen and his name is announced. He has certainly captured the imagination here in Russia and was confident enough to set his sights on the Golden Boot even before scoring twice against Tunisia.

  9. What do England need?published at 12:25 British Summer Time 24 June 2018

    England v Panama (13:00 BST)

    IF ENGLAND WIN

Qualification will be secured with a game to spare, setting up a final clash with Belgium on Thursday which will decide the group winners. Southgate's side currently have a goal difference of one - Belgium's is six - so a win against the Red Devils would likely be needed to finish top.

    IF ENGLAND DRAW

A place in the last 16 will be close, but not certain. They would still need a point against Belgium but a defeat in that final game, coupled with a Panama win over Tunisia, could leave England vulnerable on goal difference.

    IF ENGLAND LOSE

It's the end of the world. But England and Panama would go into the final game on three points, meaning whoever got the better result in their respective final fixtures would qualify. If both teams win they would be left in a three-way tie with Belgium, with the two teams with the best goal difference going through.

That identity of possession-based football at age group level is coming through in the first team now. We showed that against Tunisia, and when the chances came Harry Kane's way, he put them away. They will get chances today and and it’s about being clinical.

Paul Woodroffe: Can't believe Gareth Southgate hadn't used this match to rotate and use Eric Dier, Marcus Rashford, Danny Rose. He stated he picks his players based on form not name so how can Raheem Sterling possibly start today? I read that dropping him would damage him mentally....seriously???

Sam Williams: Did Gareth Southgate even watch the last England game!?! Marcus Rashford made more of an impact in five seconds than Raheem Sterling did all game, insane choice to start him again!

Lal: The England hype needs to be tempered, the team will do it's best. If it's not good enough as long as they give it everything, then accept it and move on.

I think the country reacted pretty well after the Tunisia win. We can be overly negative at times so we should embrace a good performance. There will be bigger tests than Tunisia but we showed intelligence in our play by working without the ball and I loved the way they played. I loved the organisation and it was clear to see the work on the training ground.

On Monday I asked the players for passion and energy and to enjoy it and they certainly did. Now they know how it feels to win a World Cup game. They did it really well and they need more of the same energy and commitment, but we need to be more lethal in front of goal.

    • Panama will be the 38th different nation England have faced at a World Cup – of the previous 37, they’ve only lost their first meeting against five; USA and Spain in 1950, Uruguay in 1954, Hungary in 1962 and Italy in 1990.
