Gareth Southgate said: "We were in control for the game against Tunisia, playing really well, and then a decision went against us that we had to recover from. We have to make sure we are mentally strong enough to come through anything that is thrown at us.

"We have seen throughout the tournament the importance of substitutions. They worked well for us on Monday and we have got to make sure we make the right changes again today."

Speaking ahead of kick off, England manager Gareth Southgate told BBC Sport: "We think we will have the vast majority of play which is good in this heat because we will control the tempo, but we have got to use our width properly and discipline will be the key. It is not a good day for a light blue shirt but I won't be able to be hide much."

On the match: "We have got to focus on the performance and ensure we play with intelligence. Panama have certain threats that we have got to be ready for, and we have to play with patience as Germany and Brazil have showed in recent nights."

I love that England have their own identity and that they stick to what they know. Each and every one of the players will know their role is - so if they stick to them there should be no problems against Panama.

I'm confident they will get the win - I'd like it to be more - but I think England will win 2-0.

A national holiday was declared by Panama’s president when Los Canaleros (The Canal Men) secured their place at an historic first World Cup finals. What would Juan Carlos Varela do if they make the last 16 in Russia?

Their chances appear slim, given the squad’s lack of world-class players. While Concacaf qualifying is by no means easy, they were given a brutal wake-up call of how tough things could be in Russia when trounced 6-0 by Switzerland in March. “We were stripped naked,” said coach Hernan Dario Gomez.

At 29.4 years old, they had the oldest average age of the 32 teams to qualify. This does not mean, however, that they will be pushovers.

  13. The scene in Panama...published at 11:41 British Summer Time 24 June 2018

    England v Panama (13:00 BST)

    BBC News, Panama City

    Panama fans

The sun still hasn’t risen in Panama but anyone hoping to sleep is out of luck: the fireworks have begun over the city!

I’m pretty sure half of this crowd in front of me haven’t been to bed at all, choosing to come straight from the bars instead.

The fan-zone has been set up outside the national stadium, the place where centre-back Roman Torres scored the crucial last-minute goal in the qualifiers that sent Panama to Russia 2018. This is Panama’s first World Cup and now these fans want to see them score their first goal and chalk up their first World Cup points.

Known as “la Marea Roja”, the Red Tide, most all of them are decked out in red, white and blue and carrying Panamanian flags. Should they manage to take a point against England or — they desperately hope — beat them, it would be perhaps their greatest achievement in their footballing history.

  15. What do England need?published at 11:34 British Summer Time 24 June 2018

    England v Panama (13:00 BST)

    IF ENGLAND WIN

Qualification will be secured with a game to spare, setting up a final clash with Belgium on Thursday which will decide the group winners. Southgate's side currently have a goal difference of one - Belgium's is six - so a win against the Red Devils would likely be needed to finish top.

    IF ENGLAND DRAW

A place in the last 16 will be close, but not certain. They would still need a point against Belgium but a defeat in that final game, coupled with a Panama win over Tunisia, could leave England vulnerable on goal difference.

    IF ENGLAND LOSE

It's the end of the world. But England and Panama would go into the final game on three points, meaning whoever got the better result in their respective final fixtures would qualify. If both teams win they would be left in a three-way tie with Belgium, with the two teams with the best goal difference going through.

  17. How the first game was wonpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 24 June 2018

    England v Panama (13:00 BST)

England served up an opening 25 minutes or so against Tunisia as good as anyone has managed in the tournament so far. They should have been two or three up but led through a predatory Harry Kane tap-in...

Then Kyle Walker gave away a cheap penalty, and the second half descended into a bit of a familiar tale - lots of possession against a packed defence, precious little chances.

  18. 'England fans want to fall in love with the team'published at 11:32 British Summer Time 24 June 2018

    England v Panama (13:00 BST)

    Terry Butcher
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

England fans want to fall in love with the team. When it comes to World Cups we are the best at fifth to eight place finishes, and who wants that record?

This England team probably won't win the World Cup, but go and give us a run and make the fans fall in love with you again. Gareth has done so well in knitting this squad together and making them fight together.

  19. 'People are excited back home'published at 11:30 British Summer Time 24 June 2018

    England v Panama (13:00 BST)

    Frank Lampard
    Former England & Chelsea midfielder

Gareth has worked very hard on the three at the back and the attacking midfielder playing off Harry Kane, so I'm expecting a similar team and shape. It suits the attributes of the players. If Ruben Loftus-Cheek replaces Dele Alli then it makes sense.

I believe we have a really good chance in this tournament, especially in the attacking areas, because that is normally where teams do well on this stage. We have Kane, Sterling, Rashford and Alli and they can all make a difference. People are excited back home to see a team attack and I expect them to keep that going.

Panama captain Torres reduced to tears by national anthem

When I was at their game against Belgium in Sochi, I saw that Panama will give everything they have got, but we also saw their limitations as a team.

England should beat them easily enough and I don't see them having too many problems, especially after they make the initial breakthrough.

    Prediction: 3-0
