Almost a real World Cup howler from Thibaut Courtois...

    Try now Neal...

Hey Tom, what's happened to the very useful tabs - "Stats", "Line Ups" etc. for this game? Not your department I'm sure but maybe you could pass this on. Thanks

  3. 'Japan will attack more'published at 19:57 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

    Jurgen Klinsmann
Former Germany head coach on BBC One

Japan feel comfortable with Belgium and they are not scared. They will go into the second half at 0-0 and I think they will attack more.

  4. Postpublished at 19:56 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC One

If Japan are going to keep committing the same number of players forward, they will inevitably leave space behind for the likes of Hazard and Lukaku to exploit.

David: BEL don't seem to be as good as they should be, although JPN look good defensively and very dangerous on the counter. Would like to see a Japan nick a win here.

Matt: Japan have been so organised. Playing their hearts out. The scoreline is fair and the coach will be pleased.

Jack: Tell you what, some of these Japan players should be playing in the Prem, their technical ability is really good!

  6. In too deep?published at 19:53 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

Only Vincent Kompany had more touches in the first half but is Kevin de Bruyne too far away from the Japan goal to make the difference?

Iain F: Knew England should have won the group & got this nice easy game. Belgium's momentum really blowing Japan away...

  8. No need to panicpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

Belgium have won each of their last 5 World Cup games in which they’ve been drawing at half-time prior to today and have lost just one of their previous 10 (W6 D3 L1)

  9. 'Kagawa dictating play'published at 19:49 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

The Belgians seem surprised at how good on the ball Japan are. Kagawa is getting on the ball in that number 10 role and dictating things for his side. The final pass has not quite been up to scratch, but that has been the case for both teams.

  10. 'Belgium have not been golden'published at 19:49 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

At the break, with that chance for Yuya Osako, Japan should be ahead.

We talk about Belgium's golden generation, but they have not been golden in the first half and they have a lot to do.

This is very much game on.

    The 'golden generation' curse?

Belgium for me are just like a England team from 16 years ago. Loads of promise but no togetherness

    Aaron Scarborough

Question I'm pondering on my way home; which player has enhanced his chances of a move to a big team the most during this tournament?

    Paul in Manchester.

  12. 'Right tactics for Japan'published at 19:47 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

    Martin Keown
    Former England defender in Russia

Japan have surprised me and they've played the right tactics. They've deprived Belgium of possession but it has been an energy-sapping first half and you wonder how long they can keep this up for?

  13. Postpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

Jurgen Klinsmann called it before the game, he said that Japan would be right in this game.

  14. HALF-TIMEpublished at 45 mins

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

Dries Mertens hits a curler from range but it's straight at Eiji Kawashima.

Yet again the big guns have disappointed. Japan could well be ahead at the break...

  15. 'Dreadful touch from Osako'published at 19:46 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

It is a big chance for Japan. If Yuya Osako had taken a better touch he would have had a great chance from four yards. Dreadful touch.

  16. CLOSE!published at 44 mins

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

Thibaut Courtois! That's shocking! Yuto Nagatomo puts in a cross shot which is nudged on by Yuya Osako, he can't control it and Courtois somehow lets it through his legs!

It nearly trickles over the line but he recovers. A relieved man.

  17. Should De Bruyne play further forward?published at 19:44 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

    Martin Keown
    Former England defender in Russia

You do wonder if De Bruyne is playing too deep for Belgium and whether he should be further forward to create those passes.

  18. 'Belgium have not done enough'published at 19:43 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Defences are on top. Credit to Japan, Belgium are not at it really. Belgium have not done enough in the final third and that is their issue.

  19. Postpublished at 42 mins

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

Not a dreadful game by any stetch but we've had one shot on target each so far.

Are you watching, Brazil? The Selecao wait for the winners of this one.

  20. YELLOW CARDpublished at 40 mins

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

Every now and again Eden Hazard just pops up with some genius, like a trumpet player suddenly soloing in a jazz group. That's wonderful, skipping away from a marker and leaving three men chasing him. Gaku Shibasaki has seen enough and chops him down from behind. Booked.
