    Belgium 0-0 Japan

Not many people can, but Japan's defence can't get near Romelu Lukaku. He has the ball in the area, back to goal, and bounces off a couple of men in blue to get a shot away.

Another corner, Vincent Kompany has a swing at the loose ball but that's never on target.

Belgium reach for the big red button and Axel Witsel shoots from range. Deflected away - corner ball...

Belgium have a huge advantage in terms of height but Japan defend that well.

Ex-Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Japan have shown no fear in the early stages. They are confident on the ball and are pressing high, but I think that is dangerous against Belgium.

Belgium can't get De Bruyne on the ball because there is always somebody on him. Japan are not frightened at all.

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

I fear that France v Argentina wa a red herring as the opening game of the knockout stage. Since then they have all been a touch edgy and cautious. Teams are often too scared of making a mistake to take any risks. That's good from Eden Hazard though, beating three men in midfield to open up the game but Yannick Carrasco again loses the ball.

Is the Dalian Yifang winger a weak link? Actually he may have won a penalty had he gone down there. A bold tackle on the edge of the area...

Takashi Inui has started really well and the Eibar winger puts in a lovely dipping cross which is heading toward Genki Haraguchi until Vincent Kompany cranes his neck to clear.

    Really fine defending.

  11. 'Belgium being asked to defend'published at 19:09 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

We haven't really seen Belgium defend in this competition but they are being asked to now. Japan have started pretty well but it only takes a moment of brilliance for Belgium.

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

Romelu Lukaku's hold-up play is good, he tees up Yannick Carrasco who drives inside, exchanges passes with Dries Mertens and doesn't get a shot off when he had a chance.

  13. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

A great ball sends Takashi Inui down the left, into the space occupied by the Belgian wing-back, but his cross in is scuffed and lacks quality. Confident start from the underdogs though.

  14. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

Good start from Japan. They are into Belgium at every opportunity, stripping Yannick Carrasco of the ball on the left wing and then forcing Kevin de Bruyne into a foul.

KdB would miss a potential quarter-final appearance with a booking tonight.

  15. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

Belgium look to hit Romelu Lukaku for the first time and Saint Maya Yoshida reads it well and clears it away. Decent tempo to the opening of the game, as Eden Hazard gets sandwiched in midfield.

Japan have elected to press really early in the game, which is what they are going to have to do. Belgium are like the Harlem Globetrotters of international football with so many talented players in the squad.

That shot came from a poor header from Yannick Carrasco. Two mistakes already from the former Atletico Madrid man.

The on field officials are Senegalese tonight. I'm sure they have no ill will toward Japan whatsoever...

  18. Postpublished at 1 min

    Belgium 0-0 Japan

Sloppy first touch from Yannick Carrasco as Japan press high right from the start. Interesting to see Kevin de Bruyne coming right back to the defence to get on the ball. And a very early chance!

Shinji Kagawa seizes on a poor header and shoots wide from 20 yards!

  19. KICK-OFFpublished at 1 min

Romelu Lukaku gets us under way - he's scored 17 in his last 11 games for Belgium...
